Foreign media outlets questioned BTS’s receiving only one nomination for the 2022 Grammy Awards

BTS has been nominated for the Grammy Awards for 2 years in a row, but foreign media outlets pointed out that the Grammys evaluated BTS more harshly than expected.

The U.S. Recording Academy announced on Nov 23rd (local time) that BTS has been nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. BTS achieved a milestone of winning the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 10 weeks with “Butter” this year, raising expectations that they would be nominated for the “General Fields” (four standard awards for musical works which do not restrict nominees by genre or some other criterion). Unfortunately, this did not happen.

The “General Fields” refer to Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist. Billboard predicted that BTS would be nominated for the “General Fields” such as Record of the Year.

Regarding the list of nominees released by the Grammys on the same day, AP reported, “Some major singles that dominated both social media and music charts in the Record of the Year and Song of the Year categories were excluded. What’s even more surprising is that BTS’s ‘Butter’ was rejected.” AP added, “Korean group BTS’s ‘Butter’ was a mega hit this summer, but the Grammys put BTS on the list of candidates in only one category.”

Los Angeles Times (LAT) reported, “Even after releasing three No.1 singles this year, global pop sensation BTS received only one nomination for the 2022 Grammy Awards. ‘Butter’ spent a whopping 10 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart, but BTS was excluded from the coveted record and song of the year categories.”

dpa news questioned the Grammys’ decision, saying that BTS, Drake and Megan Thee Stallion were eliminated from the candidates for the Album of the Year category. The daily USA Today also pointed out that popular chart-toppers including BTS, Drake and Miley Cyrus were omitted from major nominations for the Grammys. USA Today wrote, “‘Butter’ is the song of summer that broke a record on Spotify’s global chart for biggest song debut in the platform’s history. So only one nod for best pop duo/group performance? The BTS Army would like a word.”
