“The Glory” is the story of Moon Dong Eun (Song Hye Kyo) who seeks revenge on her highschool tormentors through a carefully crafted plan she has plotted with almost all of her adulthood. Among the highschool bullies is Choi Hye Jeong, a stewardess, played by Cha Joo Young.

For the interview, Cha Joo Young expressed, “Hye Jeong was quite a difficult task for me. I tried to live as Hye Jeong, but it took some time to go deep. I thought about it, but went back to being faithful to the script,” adding, “I thought Hye Jeong herself was a simple-minded character. So I prepared her character in a one-dimensional way by thinking about the surroundings simply. I wanted to look like a fluttering, light-hearted kid.”

She further explained, “I didn’t know where this friend would stick and what direction she would have, so I wanted her to look inside,” said the actress in explaining the character construction process.

“There were some scenes that I wanted to film again before I got into the character,” Cha Joo Young expressed, “I wanted to re-shoot the scene where I talk to my stewardess junior and the scene after getting a ring from my fiance.” The actress showed her disappointment, “I was so disappointed in that scene because I acted with people I met only once.”

Joo Young further reasoned, “I had to shoot very early, so I needed time to go into Hye Jeong, but I was worried that it would be obvious that I was acting without confidence.” She went on, “I thought that I could express the emotions that only I know, a little more sophisticatedly.”

The scene that left a lot of regrets in the actress became a blessing in disguise. Cha Joo Young explained, “After finishing the scene, I came to my senses. I thought, ‘Is this the time you’re doing this? Do it right.’ I’ve been struggling to live as Hye Jeong so far and came to the scene, and I thought, ‘This is the only thing I can do.’ I remember thinking, ‘Let’s prepare well again’ as I went home.”

It turns out a lot of hard work went into a seemingly one-dimensional character with only care for material gains. It also shows how much thought and effort Cha Joo Young puts into her character.
