True Beauty”, which aired last year, was not only popular in Korea but also in foreign countries. This drama was broadcast in Japan, and the original webtoon also attracted keen attention in Europe. With Moon Ga-young hitting 6 million followers on SNS, Kang Min-ah 3 million, and Hwang In-yeop 7 million, the actors of “True Beauty” proved themselves as hot topics. Cha Eun-woo already had many followers even before the drama broadcast. However, after he appeared in “True Beauty”, his SNS account rapidly surpassed 13 million followers.

Works that can attract attention from the beginning till the end of broadcasts have an energy that we can feel just by looking at the script. The original webtoon of “True Beauty” was already a successful work, so it guaranteed the success of the drama version. Unexpectedly, Cha Eun-woo confessed that he hesitated to appear in this drama when reading the script for the first time. The actor revealed the story of how he got cast, saying “Before being cast for the drama, I  already heard fans saying that the character Suho was similar to me. ASTRO members, Moonbin and Sanha, also told me that the character resembled me a lot. At that time, I reacted, “Really?”, to those words and just passed over them”, adding, “It was so amazing that I was cast for the drama two weeks after I finished reading the webtoon”.

In addition, he said, “It was actually quite burdensome to play a character that has an original version”, adding, “In hope of showing a new side of myself, I talked to the director and writer then ended up taking on the role of Suho”. Regarding the character Suho, Cha Eun-woo said, “He’s a cool person. I often enjoy playing pranks rather than looking cool. It was really difficult for me to show cool expressions. Since the original version was already so cool, I wondered how to portray the character well.”

Cha Eun-woo said he also worried about playing a character that looks similar to the one in his previous work. Before “True Beauty”, he appeared in tvN’s drama “Gangnam Beauty”, which tells about a female, who has some problems related to her appearance, undertaking plastic surgery due and beginning a new life. In this work, Cha Eun-woo played Do Kyung-seok, a perfect man who has a cold personality. Since his characters have some similarities, Cha Eun-woo tried to differentiate himself by acting. The actor explained, “In the case of Suho, I put lots of effort into the action scenes. In order to make this character look different, I talked to the director and paid more attention to my acting. Through communication and conversations at the filming site, my acting was completed”.

Cha Eun-woo has appeared in several works which are adapted from webtoons, such as “Gangnam Beauty”, “True Beauty” and his upcoming drama “Island” on OCN. The actor said, “I tried to make a wise choice in every work”, adding, “It doesn’t mean that I don’t feel pressured when acting in an adaptation. Rather than sticking to the original version, I think the viewers will like it more if I show and blend myself into the character well”.
