Some Korean stars surprised netizens when they got caught up in smoking incidents
1. Lim Young Woong
In 2021, singer Lim Young Woong was caught not wearing a mask and smoking inside the DMC Digital Cube building in Mapo-gu, Seoul where he recorded a TV Chosun program. As a controversy arose, Lim Young Woong admitted to smoking indoors and issued an apology through his fancafe. His agency also explained, “The singer thought it was not considered a cigarette because it contains nicotine-free e-cigarette. We will prohibit the use of it from now on”.
2. Somyi
Former DIA member & BJ Somyi shocked fans when she posted a selfie taken while smoking on her Instagram in February. In the photo, Somyi was smoking an e-cigarette and making a lovely pose. A netizen commented, “I’ve begun to have like you less, Somyi unnie”. Somyi got criticized for making a somewhat aggressive reply, “Whether I smoked or not”, rather than an apology.
3. Han So Hee
Han So Hee released a selfie with a cigarette in her mouth on SNS in the past. At that time, the actress surprised many people as she was not only smoking but also showing off tattoos all over her body. After rising to stardom in 2020 with the role of Yeo Da Kyung in JTBC’s drama “The World of the Married”, Han So Hee once again made headlines when she uploaded a picture showing her back when standing on a rooftop and looking as if she was smoking. However, her agency did not release any position regarding the controversial smoking photos.
4. D.O (Do Kyung Soo)
EXO member & actor D.O was also spotted with smoke coming out from his nose in a video filmed in the waiting room of EXO when the group promoted their 7th full album “EXIST” on MBC’s “Music Core”. In response to D.O’s indoor-smoking incident, netizens said, “I can’t believe he did it when all the staff and EXO members were there”, “I was very shocked to see that”, etc. In the end, Mapo Health Center decided to fine D.O for violating the smoking ban in non-smoking areas.
5. Go Hyun Jung
After being appointed as an adjunct professor of Theater & Film at Dongguk University, Go Hyun Jung received harsh criticism when a photo showing the actress smoking in class was released. The person who released the photo said, “Professor Go Hyun Jung smoked in class. Parents of a student called the school to protest. However, the school said Professor Go Hyun Jung’s smoking was an unavoidable situation, and told us to ignore it.”
