BTS Jungkook Profile: A“Golden Maknae” and Prominent Global Artist (2024 Updated)

Alongside being known as the youngest member of BTS, Jungkook has also established his name as a soloist with numerous achievements. 

Who is Jungkook? 

Jungkook, whose full name is Jeon Jungkook, was born on September 1, 1997. He is the youngest member (maknae) of famous K-pop boy group BTS, and serves as the center, main vocalist, and a visual of the group.

Jungkook’s Basic Info

Jungkook was born in Busan, South Korea. He has an older brother named Jeon Junghyun.

In 2017, Jungkook graduated from the School of Performing Arts (SOPA), and decided to forgo the CSATs – Korea’s nationwide university entrance exam. In 2022, he received a degree in Broadcasting and Entertainment from Global Cyber University. He was awarded the President’s Award, the school’s highest honor, at the time.

  • Before BTS

Jungkook joined Big Hit in 2011, and went to Los Angeles to receive dance training in 2012. In the same year, he appeared in Jo Kwon’s “I’m Da One” MV, and worked as a dancer for GLAM – Big Hit’s girl group at the time. 

  • BTS

Jungkook debuted with BTS on June 13, 2013, and has since released an extensive discography with the group. He is known to have produced a few BTS’s songs, including “Love is Not Over” and “Magic Shop”.

  • Solo

In 2015, Jungkook participated in the “One Dream, One Korea” campaign. Through this campaign, he released a collaboration song alongside numerous Korean artists, in memory of the Korean War. 

In 2020, Jungkook dropped the self-produced solo song “Still With You” as part of BTS’ yearly debut celebrations. In 2022, he released another self-produced song, “My You”. 

Jungkook kicked off official solo activities with the digital single “Seven (feat. Latto)”, released in 2023. This is followed by Jungkook’s 1st solo studio album “Golden”, which was released in the same year. “Golden” and “Seven” are known to have enjoyed both global and domestic success, hard-launching Jungkook as a prominent global artists even outside of BTS. 

He also released many collaboration songs, OSTs, and featured in tracks such as Charlie Puth’s “Left and Right”. 

In 2023, Jungkook was announced to be the brand global ambassador of Calvin Klein. He enlisted in December 2023 alongside fellow BTS member Jimin. 

In January 2024, Jungkook was promoted to a full member of the Korea Music Copyright Association thanks to his participation in various songs.

Jungkook initially dreamt of becoming a badminton player, but changed his mind after seeing G-Dragon perform “Heartbreaker” on television.

In 2011, Jungkook auditioned for the South Korean talent show Superstar K during its auditions in Daegu. Though he was not selected, he received casting offers from 7 entertainment companies, but eventually chose Big Hit after seeing RM performed. 

Jungkook is known to be a tattoo lover, and has at least 18 known tattoos, with some of them being dedicated to BTS and ARMY (BTS’s fandom). 

Jungkook donated 1 billion won to Seoul National University Children’s Hospital in April 2023 for treatment expenses of patients from low-income families and the hospital’s integrated care center.

Health Issue

In 2017, Jungkook collapsed during a BTS concert in Chile. In 2018, during BTS’s “Love Yourself World Tour”, he suffered a heel injury which prevented him from participating in choreography. He did not withdraw from the subsequent European leg of the tour, but sang while seated. 

In November 2019, Jungkook was involved in a car accident with a taxi. Neither party suffered any major injuries, and both reached an amicable settlement

Controversy

Back in 2020, Jungkook, alongside 97-line friends NCT’s Jaehyun, SEVENTEEN’s Mingyu, and ASTRO’s Cha Eunwoo, was reported to have gone to a bar in Itaewon when Korea was employing social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While all idols involved have issued apologies and it was later clarified that the incident happened when life has mostly returned to normal in Korea, Jungkook ended up as the most criticized due to his popularity.
