BLACKPINK Renew Group Contract? YG “ We’re Still In Discussion”

YG continues to deny giving a clear statement on rumors of BLACKPINK’s contract renewal

On November 20th, Munhwa Ilbo reported that the four BLACKPINK members had decided to continue their group activities under YG Entertainment. Although contracts for individual activities are still undecided, the members don’t have any disagreement with continuing to do BLACKPINK activities as a group.

In this regard, YG Entertainment said to Donga.com, “Nothing has been confirmed, We are still in discussion”.

It is true that nothing has been decided yet. If the members want to carry out individual activities in any place other than YG, they should decide on that first then arrange the terms of BLACKPINK contract by connecting company with company. The problem is that it is impossible to sign BLACKPINK contract first. The profit situation for each company varies depending on the priority activities. Therefore, there are no precedent cases of signing contracts for group activity before determining the individual agency.

This year, the most critical issue for YG Entertainment itself is the renewal of BLACKPINK’s contract. While there are many idol IPs (intellectual properties) secured so far, among the currently active idol groups, BLACKPINK is the only one without an IP.

With BLACKPINK’s significant impact on YG Entertainment’s business areas such as stock prices, the entertainment agency is putting effort into the renewal of BLACKPINK, aiming for the group’s continuity and regular activities, not disbandment.

However, the thoughts of each BLACKPINK member are different. While there are advantages to group activities, there is also a strong desire for each member to brand themselves, making it not easy to find a compromise. Although the number of members is relatively small compared to other groups, finding a consensus is equally challenging.

Therefore, YG Entertainment’s dilemma is deep. They are exploring ways to maintain BLACKPINK as a group, but it is difficult to reach a compromise and narrow down opinions, making it challenging to confirm renewal.
