On August 20, Feng Ji revealed via his personal Weibo account that the studio will not be developing a DLC (downloadable content expansion) for Black Myth: Wukong at this time. Instead, Game Science is shifting its focus to a brand-new project within the same mythological universe, titled Black Myth: Zhong Kui.

In his letter, Feng Ji admitted that while Black Myth: Wukong exceeded expectations and became a massive success, he felt empty and pressured under fans’ anticipation. He acknowledged that creating a DLC might be the safer path, but also described it as too restrictive, failing to inspire creativity within the team after more than six months of planning.

As a result, Game Science has chosen a bold new direction—embarking on Black Myth: Zhong Kui, which will allow the developers greater creative freedom to experiment with new characters, gameplay mechanics, and storytelling elements. Feng Ji also assured fans that the legendary Monkey King, Sun Wukong, will eventually return, but only when the team is fully prepared to do justice to his legacy.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions among fans. Many expressed excitement at the idea of another AAA-level masterpiece, praising Game Science for prioritizing innovation. However, some gamers expressed disappointment, saying that Black Myth: Wukong still feels incomplete, with its six released chapters leaving much more to be explored.
At Gamescom 2025, Game Science surprised audiences by officially unveiling Black Myth: Zhong Kui, which will serve as the spiritual successor to Wukong. Currently in early development, the project has only released a short teaser trailer without gameplay footage, but it promises to expand the Black Myth universe further.

The character of Zhong Kui holds deep significance in Chinese mythology and folk religion. Known as the deity who vanquishes demons and suppresses evil spirits, Zhong Kui symbolizes righteousness and divine authority, serving as a protector of humankind against dark forces. He is often depicted as a fearsome figure with a robust build, fierce eyes, bushy beard, clad in red or blue robes, and wielding a magical sword to exorcise malevolent beings.
By choosing to spotlight Zhong Kui, Game Science continues its mission of bringing legendary Chinese mythological figures to global audiences. While the decision to pause Wukong’s DLC may leave some fans unsatisfied, the bold pivot underscores the studio’s commitment to long-term creativity over short-term safety.
