“Big Mouth” Kim Joo-heon shared about the difficulties he faced while playing the villain Choi Do-ha

Actor Kim Joo-heon revealed what he felt while playing Choi Do-ha, the final villain of “Big Mouth.”

Kim Joo-heon appeared in an interview with Wikitree at a cafe in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul on Sep 20th and shared his feelings about MBC’s Friday-Saturday drama “Big Mouth.”

In “Big Mouth”, Kim Joo-heon played the role of “Choi Do-ha,” mayor of Gucheon-si and a hidden villain. The hidden narrative behind this character’s gentle manner and good appearance was revealed in the second half of the drama, revealing his strong presence as a villain.

During the interview Kim Joo-heon talked about the ending of “Big Mouth,” “I like the ending. Some might say, ‘Isn’t it too easy for Choi Do-ha? he should have received a proper punishment’. However, in reality, there are many cases where evil is not properly punished. When I received the script, I prioritized how to make the audience understand it first. I wonder if I should have approached my role more fiercely in that regard,” he said.

Free-diving shots were not difficult, according to Kim. He said, “In 2015, I got to learn free diving through an older brother I knew and did little by little. There was a time when the underwater filming team had to hand me the oxygen provider tube because I had to wait in the water for a long time. However, when I bit on the provider, I panicked. I heard that sometimes it happens when you are not trained to use those. Other than that, I had a great time,” he said, revealing the behind-the-scenes story.

“It was also difficult because Choi Do-ha is a complex character and the final villain who had to hide his identity. When I thought of Choi Do-ha, I thought of fog, swamps, and unpleasant things. He is not unpleasant when you first meet him, but the more you stay with him, the more you thought of unpleasant images,” he said.

“The acting I’m doing now may lead to a scene of reminiscence in the second half, but if I express it incorrectly, it might not fit. On the other hand, when Choi Do-ha finally revealed his personality, I tried to put in some irregularities. If his pattern of behavior is predicted, the unpleasantness and fear will disappear as you get used to it,” he explained his emphasis while acting.

As such, Kim Joo-heon made “Big Mouth” not only by character setting but also by the thought “What would it have been like if I were Choi Do-ha?” Among them, Kim Joo-heon said the scene that showed Choi Do-ha best was when Park Chang-ho (Lee Jong-suk), who was thought to be dead, walked to the funeral.

Regarding his satisfaction with acting, he shook his head and said, “As always, I’m not satisfied. In particular, there’s a scene where Park Chang-ho and Choi Do-ha face each other through a glass. The next day, I told the director, ‘I filmed it wrong. I think I did it wrong.'”

Kim Joo-heon posted still cuts of “Big Mouth” on his personal Instagram with the caption “Curse as much as you want. It’s okay”. He said, “I knew many people would talk about Choi Do-ha and get angry at him, so I wanted them to come here and curse. It could relieve their anger.”

Kim Joo-heon, who played a villain role in “Big Mouth”, confirmed his appearance in writer Seo Sook-hyang’s new work “Ask the Stars” as his next project. Regarding his next work, he shared, “It’s different from the works I’ve done so far. My character is an astronaut, and that alone is enough to stimulate curiosity. I’m thinking about how to express it in a fun way, and I’m discussing a lot with my co-stars.”
