‘AI Covers? I’ll Sing It Myself’ – Aespa’s Winter Receives Overwhelming Support for Her Stance on AI Covers

Aespa’s Winter is receiving praise for her candid remarks on AI covers.

On the 30th, Winter addressed questions about the popular AI covers during a live broadcast. While jokingly saying, “AI is bad,” she then offered to sing various songs herself, including Lee Seung-chul’s “West Sky,” Baek Ji-young’s “I Don’t Love You,” Beast’s “On Rainy Days,” IU’s “Good Day,” Taeyang’s “Eyes, Nose, Lips,” TVXQ’s “Mirotic,” and Taeyeon’s “Two X.”

Recently, AI-generated covers of songs, where AI mimics a singer’s voice, have become popular online. For example, AI versions of NewJeans’ “Hype Boy” sung by AI Bruno Mars, IU’s “Good Day” sung by AI Im Jae-bum, and “Bam Yanggang” sung by AI IU have garnered interest for offering a similar feel to the original songs.

However, such content raises copyright issues and controversy, as it involves unauthorized use of original artists’ voices and efforts, leading to concerns about intellectual property and fair compensation.

Artists themselves have expressed their discomfort. Jang Yoon-jung remarked in March, “If this is the case, why would singers record? You could just use AI with my voice to sell music.” Park Myung-soo also stated, “If it’s for fun, it’s fine, but selling it or using it in this way is problematic. Bad people might use AI voices for voice phishing. We need measures to address this issue.”

Internationally, over 200 prominent artists, including Billie Eilish and Katy Perry, have signed an open letter advocating against the predatory use of AI to exploit artists’ voices.

Against this backdrop, Winter’s firm stance has surprised many fans. Her live performance, showcasing her unique vocal tone, highlights that “AI cannot replicate an artist’s unique talent and value,” earning her even more support.

Winter and Aespa will continue their tour, meeting fans in 14 locations across Asia and Australia, including Hong Kong, Taipei, Tokyo, Jakarta, Sydney, Melbourne, Macau, and Bangkok, with their final show in Fukuoka, Japan on the 31st.
