On the August 1st episode of KBS 2TV’s Heart on Wheels , cast members Lee Min-jung , Boom , Ahn Jae-hyun , Kim Jung-hyun , Kim Jae-won — collectively known as Jeongnammae — visited Udo Island in Goheung, Jeollanam-do, with guest Young Tak .
The heartwarming and hilarious episode lit up Friday night as the cast and guest Young Tak prepared a surprise birthday celebration for Ahn Jae-hyun , who coincidentally filmed on his actual birthday.
Young Tak stole the spotlight with his prank entrance, dressed as a snack bar owner. He later joined the cast for mudflat games, dashed around the shore, and even headed out to sea with Boom . His performance of “Drink Makgeolli” lifted spirits, prompting Boom to praise, “He doesn’t feel out of place — like he’s always been part of the family.”
The emotional centerpiece was the surprise birthday plan. Tension shown at the end of the previous episode — particularly between Lee Min-jung and Kim Jae-won — was revealed to be part of an elaborate ruse to fool Ahn Jae-hyun.
Earlier, the cast played a mudskipper-catching game to determine who would ride into the island. Kim Jung-hyun gave his spot to a fatigued Lee Min-jung , prompting a joking complaint from Kim Jae-won . This playful moment escalated into a mock argument, with Ahn Jae-hyun visibly stressed, unaware it was staged.
Lee Min-jung and Kim Jae-won took turns pretending to argue and confide in Ahn Jae-hyun , who patiently tried to mediate. He even sat beside Kim Jae-won as he ate ramen alone, offering kind words.
The surprise reached its peak during dinner. As Ahn Jae-hyun calmly ate a salty seaweed soup made by Kim Jae-won , another round of staged conflict unfolded. Boom broke the tension by joking, “Can we stop filming now?” just before the cake was brought out. Realizing it had all been a setup, Ahn Jae-hyun burst into tears. Lee Min-jung , touched by his reaction, also cried. The cast comforted him with hugs and birthday wishes. A tearful Ahn Jae-hyun said, “As long as you weren’t fighting, I’m relieved,” then added, “I’d rather be Gaojeong’s third child forever than win first place in the lottery.”
To end the day, Lee Min-jung gave him a handwritten card and a perfume set she’d prepared. Her message read, “You’re warm, considerate, and thoughtful. One is for men, one for women — I hope you meet someone wonderful.” Ahn Jae-hyun responded, “This was the best birthday surprise ever.”
Through Gaojeong, the cast not only connected with the local community but also strengthened their bond as a family.
Meanwhile, a special Gaojeong festival is set to air in the next episode, featuring mouthwatering Chinese dishes by master chef Yeo Kyung-rae and showstopping performances from trot prince Young Tak . The laughter- and tear-filled episode of Heart on Wheels airs Friday, August 8 at 10 PM on KBS 2TV.
