An expanding scope of album consumption contributes to a growing, central income for an idol group and their management company. Nevertheless, creators also receive a whopping amount of royalty from producing songs for popular names. Kim Young Chul, a Crazy Music musician, said a musician frequently earned around KRW 250 million in royalty from a song they joined in composing. “That’s why smiles have blossomed on the faces of K-pop songwriters these day,” said Kim Young Chul.

Lately, more idols are showing a broader scope of abilities by producing, composing, and writing lyrics for new song releases themselves, apart from the required skillset of an idol. Some notable names in the industry include Woozi (SEVENTEEN), G-Dragon (BIGBANG), and Soyeon ((G)I-DLE), to name a few. Therefore, other than the earning agreed upon between idols and their companies, these idols also receive another stream of income thanks to songs’ royalties. Moreover, seeing your favorite idol on the credit of a song is also a source of pride.
