A lonely fight of “Big Mouth” as the current result shattered the pride of drama series on terrestrial channels

Even though we know terrestrial dramas can sometimes be disappointing, the current situation is just too much.

On August 14th, according to Nielsen Korea, a survey company specializing in TV ratings, the 6th episode of MBC’s Friday-Saturday drama “Big Mouse,” which aired on the previous day, had a 10.8% viewer rating nationwide. This is its own highest viewer rating and a whopping 4.7% increase compared to the 1st episode.

Although “Big Mouth” is struggling to save the pride of terrestrial dramas, the performance of other recent terrestrial dramas is poor.

The latest episode of SBS Friday-Saturday drama “Today’s Webtoon”, which is competing in the same time zone as “Big Mouth,” has a viewer rating of 2.8%, less than 3%. In the case of KBS, the mini-series “Café Minamdang” and “If You Wish Upon Me” are broadcasted on Monday-Tuesday and Wednesday-Thursday respectively, and the latest episode ratings of each work are only 4.3% and 3.0%, below 5%.

When compared to cable dramas that are far ahead as the talk of the town recently, the situation of terrestrial channels is even more painful. In the case of tvN, the popular writer Hong Sisters wrote the script for the weekend drama “Alchemy of Souls,” which has a viewer rating of more than 7%. In addition, its Monday-Tuesday drama “Poong The Joseon Psychiatrist” also rides the wave, raising its viewer rating from 3.9% in the 1st episode to 5.1% in the 4th episode.

It will be ridiculous to not mention ENA’s Wednesday-Thursday drama “Extraordinary Attorney Woo“. Overcoming the limitations of a somewhat less accessible channel, the series is gaining huge popularity, writing its own highest viewer rating of 15.8% in the 9th episode. In particular, the drama was even rejected by SBS, which makes it even more painful for terrestrial broadcasters.

SBS has prepared “One Thousand Won Lawyer” starring Nam Goong-min in the second half of the year and “Cheer Up,” which boldly casts young actors such as Han Ji-hyun and Bae In-hyuk. KBS will start broadcasting “Law Café” starring Lee Seung-gi and Lee Se-young on the 5th of next month. Fans are highly expecting the collaboration between Lee Seung-gi, who is called a rating guarantee check, and Lee Se-young, who is receiving positive reactions after the drama “The Red Sleeve.”

Can these three works rebuild the pride of the collapsing “drama kingdom” of terrestrial channels? Attention is focused on the result of upcoming terrestrial dramas in the second half of the year.
