I.O.I’s upcoming comeback song is already stirring intense debate online — even before its full release.
The group is set to release their third mini album Loop on May 19 in celebration of their 10th debut anniversary. However, ahead of the official release, a challenge clip for the title track “Suddenly” was unexpectedly unveiled, immediately drawing mixed reactions from fans and netizens.

Many listeners were surprised by the song’s unexpected sound. The teaser’s melody line reminded some of trot music, while others described it as synth-pop with a quirky and unusual atmosphere. Compared to I.O.I’s bright and energetic past hits like Very Very Very, the new song appears to take a dramatically different direction.
As clips from the teaser spread online, reactions quickly became polarized.
Some fans criticized the musical choice, commenting:
- This doesn’t feel suitable for a 10th anniversary comeback.
- It’s not just experimental it’s awkward.
- Did Kang Mina decide not to participate after hearing the song?

The mention of Kang Mina drew additional attention, as fans continue discussing the incomplete reunion lineup for the anniversary comeback.
However, not everyone reacted negatively. Other listeners defended the song’s unconventional style, saying:
- It has a strangely addictive quality that sticks in your head after one listen.
- It’s better than songs filled with meaningless lyrics these days.
The title track was produced by married producer duo Kush and VVN, who are known for creating songs such as Flower by Jisoo, “Bingle Bingle” by Heize, and “Flower” by Jo Hyun Ah.
Listeners familiar with the producers’ previous work pointed out that “Suddenly” appears to follow a similar musical style — unconventional at first listen, but potentially addictive over time.
The full mini album, including “Suddenly,” will officially be released on May 19 at 6 PM KST.
