On the December 10 episode of tvN STORY’s variety show “What’s the Point of Leaving?”, actress Lee Yu-ri appeared as a special guest and revealed her pick for the ultimate TV villain.
Lee Yu-ri, who famously played the notorious villain Yeon Min-jung in the 2014 drama “Jang Bo-ri is Here!”, winning an acting award that year, shared her thoughts on portraying antagonists. Co-host Lee Young-ja remarked, “You’ve played many villains and gained love, but it must have been stressful.”
Lee Yu-ri candidly replied, “Actually, playing villains relieves stress more. Acting as a villain lets you release tension. Playing kind characters requires restraint. Being ‘good’ feels stifling. When you’re a villain, you can shout and release emotions it’s expressive.”

Co-host Kim Sook expressed concern, saying, “Do you cry and scream so much? You must be exhausted at home.” Lee Yu-ri countered, “It feels refreshing. Like at a karaoke, you shout. Playing kind roles is tougher even after leaving the set.”
When asked to choose the ultimate villain among Korea’s top three Shin Ae-ri in “Temptation of Wife”, Cheon Seo-jin in “Penthouse”, and Yeon Min-jung in “Jang Bo-ri is Here!” Lee Yu-ri selected Kim So-yeon’s Cheon Seo-jin. She explained, “Cheon Seo-jin. She killed so many people there. I never committed murder,” highlighting the character’s dramatic extremity compared to her own villain roles.
Lee Yu-ri’s candid reflections provided fans with a rare glimpse into the mindset and enjoyment of playing TV villains, showing that even the darkest characters can be a source of artistic release for actors.
