Wayne Rooney has sounded an alarm for Liverpool following their shocking 0–3 defeat to Nottingham Forest at Anfield on November 22.
Nottingham Forest had not won consecutive matches at Anfield since 1963 and have been struggling this season amid frequent managerial changes. Despite their challenges, the visitors managed to hand Liverpool a humiliating home loss. The reigning English champions once again displayed inconsistency and a lack of cohesion, even with home support behind them.

Speaking on Match of the Day, Rooney drew parallels between Liverpool’s current state and the decline Manchester United suffered in recent years. He stressed the importance of strong leadership in the dressing room, especially during rough patches.
“Liverpool are a strong team, but they’ve been struggling all season. Even when they win, the performances are shaky. The leaders in that squad need to lift the team’s spirit, or they’ll fall down the table just like Manchester United or Tottenham did,” Rooney said.

The former United captain emphasized that manager Arne Slot must urgently address the defensive frailties. “In tough times, the most important thing is to keep the team compact. Right now, Liverpool are too open and easy to exploit,” he noted.
Although Liverpool are still in the process of rebuilding after winning their most recent title just a few months ago, their current form reveals deeper structural issues. Rooney pointed out how his former club paid the price for a similar slump last season, finishing 15th in the Premier League and missing out on European competition.
Rooney’s warning is clear: Liverpool must halt this downward spiral immediately or risk mirroring Manchester United’s painful decline.
