A disturbing case of alleged medical negligence has surfaced in South Korea, where five healthcare workers from a psychiatric hospital operated by well-known psychiatrist and television personality Yang Jae Woong are facing legal action over the death of a patient in solitary confinement.

According to The Korea Herald, prosecutors in Incheon have formally charged a doctor in his 40s (not Yang) and indicted four nurses aged between 40 and 50 without detention. The charges stem from an incident in May 2024, when a woman in her 30s died at the hospital in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, just 17 days after being admitted for treatment related to diet pill addiction.

The woman reportedly died from acute colonic obstruction, a condition that prosecutors claim resulted from insufficient medical attention and care.

Investigators found that the attending doctor failed to monitor the patient adequately despite her repeated complaints of severe abdominal pain, instead prescribing antipsychotic medication. Moreover, he is accused of falsifying medical records after her death.

The nurses involved are also accused of administering medication without proper prescriptions and restraining the patient in a solitary room, where she was tied up and left unattended, even as she continued to cry out in pain.

Following the incident, the deceased patient’s family filed an official complaint. In March 2025, the National Human Rights Commission escalated the case to the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office, demanding a thorough investigation into allegations of forged records and professional misconduct.

Although Dr. Yang Jae Woong is not directly involved in the charges, his role as the hospital’s head and public figure has drawn significant scrutiny —especially due to the timing of personal announcements following the patient’s death.

Yang is engaged to Hani, a member of the K-pop girl group EXID. The couple announced their engagement on May 31, 2024, just days after the woman’s death, sparking criticism online. The backlash intensified after Yang became publicly linked to the investigation in July 2024.

On July 29, Yang issued a formal apology through his agency Mystic Story, stating: “I sincerely apologize to the deceased and her grieving family for their loss.” On August 2, Hani announced the postponement of their planned September wedding.

This case unfolds amid growing concerns in South Korea about mental health care and social pressure. As social psychologist Jonathan Haidt notes, modern youth face an entirely new form of stress—constant exposure to validation and comparison through likes, comments, and online metrics. These digital pressures often distort self-worth and blur the line between public image and private reality.

In a society where mental health still battles stigma, this tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for reform in psychiatric care, accountability in medical institutions, and the ethical responsibilities of public figures.
