At the recent Vogue Fashion Gala in Shanghai, two of China’s top actresses Yang Mi and Liu Yifei found themselves at the same table, face to face. But what could have been a moment of reunion turned into an icy standoff.
According to Sinchew, the event organizers had arranged for the two stars to sit across from each other at the centerpiece table. However, the paparazzi and attendees quickly noticed that Yang Mi and Liu Yifei did not exchange a single word or even make eye contact throughout the evening. The atmosphere was described on Weibo as “like two strangers,” and their demeanor drew widespread attention online.

During a group photo session, Vogue’s editor-in-chief Liu Xun stood between them, seemingly trying to bridge the gap but both actresses remained distant, ignoring each other despite being side by side.
Social media reactions were swift. One user commented, “They looked at each other like a mountain was in the way,” while another wrote, “You’d think they were sworn enemies.”
Their fans also clashed online, each defending their idol’s position in the industry. Liu Yifei’s supporters pointed to her feature in the magazine’s main cover and her role in closing the show, as well as her elegant floral gown adorned with ruby Bvlgari jewelry, as proof of her “undisputed status.” Yang Mi’s fans, however, argued that opening the red carpet is equally prestigious and praised her gold-embroidered Schiaparelli gown and glittering Boucheron accessories, reaffirming her “queen of resources” title.

Their strained dynamic marks a sharp contrast to the past. The two actresses once shared a close friendship, especially after co-starring in The Return of the Condor Heroes in the early 2000s. They used to support each other’s work — Yang Mi even promoted Liu Yifei’s The Third Way of Love in 2015. Liu Yifei also publicly referred to Yang Mi as a “good friend.”
However, according to QQ, the friendship started to cool off around 2017 for reasons that remain unknown. Since then, the two have been notably silent about each other on social media and have avoided public interactions.
Yang Mi, born in 1986 in Beijing, rose to fame with roles in The Condor Heroes (2006) and Palace: The Lock Heart Jade. Her breakout performance in Eternal Love solidified her status as an A-lister. In addition to acting, she’s a successful producer and fashion icon.

Liu Yifei, born in 1987 in Wuhan, is beloved for her ethereal beauty and calm presence. Nicknamed the “Fairy Sister,” she’s known for Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils, The Condor Heroes, and her lead role in Disney’s live-action Mulan, which brought her global recognition.
hether this cold encounter marks a permanent split or just a temporary rift, it’s clear that the public remains fascinated by every move of these two titans of Chinese entertainment.
