Gege Akutami, the acclaimed creator of Jujutsu Kaisen, is set to return to the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump with a brand-new manga series titled Mimojuro. The announcement, first reported by Manga Mogura on X (formerly Twitter), has sparked excitement across the global manga community.

According to the publication’s latest issue, Mimojuro will debut in the September 8, 2025 edition of Weekly Shonen Jump. While Shueisha has not yet released an official press statement, the information appears in the magazine’s table of contents, confirming the project’s existence.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Unlike Jujutsu Kaisen, which Akutami both wrote and illustrated, Mimojuro will feature Akutami handling the story while the artist of Cipher Academy takes on illustration duties. This collaboration is particularly noteworthy, as Cipher Academy was widely praised for its distinctive art style following its debut in 2023.

By partnering with a dedicated illustrator, Akutami can focus on developing the narrative while alleviating the immense physical and creative strain of producing weekly artwork—one of the most demanding aspects of manga creation.

Since its launch in 2018, Jujutsu Kaisen has grown into one of the biggest modern shounen franchises, often cited as a spiritual successor to classics like Naruto and Bleach. Its dark tone, high-stakes battles, and compelling characters made it a cornerstone of Weekly Shonen Jump until its conclusion in September 2024.

Fans are now eager to see how Akutami will innovate in Mimojuro. The combination of his storytelling expertise and the visual flair of the Cipher Academy artist has set expectations high, with many predicting the series could become another breakout success for Shueisha.

What makes Mimojuro particularly surprising is its timing. Most manga creators take extended breaks following the conclusion of a major series due to the intense workload involved. For example, Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto waited nearly five years after finishing his iconic series before returning with Samurai 8.

In contrast, Akutami is launching a new project less than a year after wrapping up Jujutsu Kaisen. This swift return has been described as “rare” within the manga industry, underscoring both Akutami’s dedication and the creative opportunities provided by working alongside another illustrator.

While details about Mimojuro’s setting, characters, and themes remain under wraps, its confirmation alone has already generated global anticipation. With Jujutsu Kaisen now regarded as a modern classic, fans and critics alike are watching closely to see what Akutami’s next creative endeavor will bring to the shounen genre. Mimojuro begins serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump on September 8, 2025.
