When it comes to One Piece, Eiichiro Oda is known for his endless creativity. But few fans expected that Sanji’s backstory and family would be directly shaped by Oda’s daughter’s taste in anime.
In several interviews, Oda admitted that his daughter was deeply into Osomatsu-san, a comedy anime that aired in 2015 from Studio Pierrot (Naruto, Tokyo Ghoul). The series follows six quirky sextuplets and their chaotic everyday lives, full of humor and absurdity.

According to Oda, this anime planted a seed: “I already planned for Sanji to have siblings, but when I saw how much my daughter loved Osomatsu-san and its six brothers, I wanted her to enjoy One Piece in the same way. So, I designed Sanji as one of four quadruplets.”
Originally, Sanji was only going to have one brother. But thanks to his daughter’s influence, Oda expanded the Vinsmoke family. This decision gave us:
- Ichiji – the strict, cold eldest son
- Niji – the arrogant second son
- Yonji – the cheeky youngest brother
- Reiju – the caring yet tragic sister
Together, they formed the Vinsmoke family, a powerful and dramatic addition that played a central role in the Whole Cake Island arc.

Sanji has always been loved as the Straw Hats’ master chef and fearless fighter with his signature Black Leg Style. However, the addition of the Vinsmoke background added a layer of tragedy and resilience, showing fans the painful past he had to overcome.
This wasn’t the first time Oda altered Sanji’s fate due to outside influence. He once revealed that Sanji’s original name was going to be “Naruto,” but he changed it after learning Masashi Kishimoto was about to debut Naruto.
