For years, One Piece fans have debated whether Portgas D. Ace’s death was truly necessary. Eiichiro Oda himself has finally clarified that Ace’s fate was sealed from the start, regardless of the heartbreaking fan reactions.

In the world of One Piece, deaths are rare, which makes each loss unforgettable. Among them, Ace’s execution during the Marineford War remains the most devastating. Captured by the World Government and sentenced to public execution, Ace became the catalyst for an all-out battle between Whitebeard’s crew and the Navy. Just as Luffy reached him, Ace fell victim to Admiral Akainu’s fatal strike, dying in his younger brother’s arms.

Oda admitted he received countless pleas from fans and even editors begging him to let Ace live. But his decision never wavered: “For Luffy to grow stronger, Ace had to die.”

According to Oda, Luffy at that stage wasn’t ready to survive in the New World. Losing Ace forced him to confront his weaknesses and vow to become stronger, not just for himself but for his crew and loved ones. This emotional trauma led to the iconic two-year time skip, where Luffy trained under Silvers Rayleigh, mastering Haki and preparing for the harsh challenges ahead. Without Ace’s sacrifice, Luffy’s motivation to evolve might never have been strong enough—potentially cutting the story short.

Though Ace’s time in the series was limited, his presence still resonates deeply with fans. As the son of Pirate King Gol D. Roger and the 2nd division commander of Whitebeard’s crew, he was one of the most promising young pirates in the Grand Line.

His will continues to burn through Luffy and Sabo. The Mera Mera no Mi, Ace’s Flame-Flame Fruit, was later inherited by Sabo ensuring that Ace’s spirit and ideals remain alive in One Piece.
