In 2003, the Chinese entertainment industry was rocked by one of its most scandalous moments. Zhang Yu, a relatively unknown actress who had only played small supporting roles in TV dramas, suddenly became the center of national controversy.
The reason? She leaked 20 explicit video clips and four written agreements, each allegedly signed by prominent directors, that read: “Spend one night, and you’ll get the role.” The files named 30 directors and producers in the industry, accusing them of exploiting her through “casting couch” arrangements.
Among the accused was Huang Jianzhong, a highly respected director known for Laughing in the Wind (2001) and widely regarded as a man of both talent and integrity at the time.
From Struggling Actress to Whistleblower
Zhang Yu had harbored acting dreams since childhood but struggled to land meaningful roles. According to her, a suggestion from a director’s assistant pushed her into the dangerous path of trading sexual favors for career opportunities. After four years of such arrangements, she claimed she still received no major breakthroughs.

One breaking point came when she attended a private party hosted by Huang Jianzhong and brought along her friend Xiao Xia, an extra at the time. Zhang Yu alleged that after sleeping with Huang, he reneged on his promise to give her a role and cut off contact entirely.
When Zhang Yu went public with the accusations, Huang Jianzhong joined forces with other top directors, including Zhang Jizhong and Yu Min, to discredit her. They painted her as greedy, a petty thief, and someone who borrowed money without repaying. Public opinion quickly turned against her, with many labeling her accusations as an attention-seeking stunt.
The Fallout
In response, Zhang Yu escalated matters by holding a press conference where she displayed the aforementioned explicit footage and detailed personal information of the accused directors. However, the accused denied all allegations, with Huang responding vaguely, “I was too drunk that night. I don’t remember anything.”

The actress’ legal battle failed when no witnesses came forward. As a result, Zhang Yu’s career imploded as she got blacklisted from the entertainment industry for 20 years. Friends, family, and neighbors shunned her, and she lived under the shadow of her own revelations.
Interestingly, China’s Procuratorate Daily commented on the case, saying, “We do not support Zhang Yu’s methods, but we cannot deny her courage.”
In 2023, she made a low-profile comeback, but without notable works and having lost much of her former beauty, her return failed to reignite public interest.
