Moon Hee-joon recently shared a deeply personal and emotional account of his family history on the July 28 broadcast of Channel A’s “Best Friend Documentary: Table for 4“, where he appeared alongside MC Park Kyung-lim, Kim Jung-tae and Kim Byung-hyun.

During the show, Moon reflected on the impact of becoming a father himself. “After having a child, I understood my own father even less,” he confessed. “My father left home about a month after I debuted. He said ‘Now that you’re earning money, I’ll be going’, and then he actually left. I thought he was joking. Back then, I tried to understand—thinking maybe my parents had their own issues.”

Taking on the role of family head at just 19 years old, Moon said, “After getting married and having a child, I couldn’t comprehend how someone could just leave their kid behind. That’s when the anger really started to build. I was going through such a hard time back then.”

Moon revealed that he still has no contact with his father. “I once reached out because I suddenly missed him, but my mother got really angry when she found out,” he said. “A few years ago, my mother passed away. Even though I personally informed my father of the funeral, he didn’t show up.”

Struggling to understand or forgive, Moon said, “Do I want to hear my father’s side of the story? No, I don’t. That desire is gone. I was shocked—twice. He could have at least come to see his child’s face. But rather than spending time trying to understand him, I think it’s better to focus on what I can do with my own kids now. I may not be perfect, but I want to be a dad who stays.”

Moon also spoke about the financial hardships he faced when he debuted with H.O.T.. “We were already in debt and living in a house without a bathroom,” he recalled. “Now, I’ve made sure that my daughter JamJam’s room has its own bathroom. I’m trying my best to be a good father.”

Known for his fierce competitiveness, Moon also shared memories of his early days. “I always came first in dance competitions, and I was accepted into SM Entertainment after placing first in their audition. While other trainees just danced and sang, I prepared eight different talents,” he said, even performing an impersonation of SM founder Lee Soo-man during the broadcast.
