44-year-old married woman, “I dated a teenage idol and got scammed 24 million won”

The story of a married Japanese woman being deceived by a man who called himself a K-pop idol is drawing attention from netizens.

44-year-old Japanese woman A, who lives with her husband and daughter in Tokyo, naturally encountered Korean content while spending time at home during the Covid-19 pandemic. She was especially interested in the K-pop idol culture.

One day, A happened to meet underground idol B (19 years old), who introduces himself as a Korean in Shin-Ōkubo, Korea Town in Tokyo. B handed A a flyer for a performance and invited her, “Please come to the show”.

Since then, A paid a large amount of money to purchase tickets for B’s performance every week in Shin-Ōkubo. In order to not lose to other fans and fall behind, she also made attempts to give B various gifts. Spending 2.5 million yen (about 24 million won) on the gifts, A got a chance to date B for 6 months.

However, their dating places were somewhat ridiculous. B took A to dermatology clinics to make her pay for the surgical procedures he received.

What’s worse is that B was later found to be a Japanese who can speak Korean, not a real Korean.

Knowing that everything was a lie, A got angry and cut all her contact with B. Reporting the story to local media, A confessed, “I felt like a fool when I found out that he’s not Korean”, adding “All the people who lie and make others spend money in this way should get caught”.

“Underground idol” refers to idols who have not debuted through the media and broadcasts. They usually perform on the street or at small concert halls and sell CDs produced by themselves. There are currently more than 10,000 underground idols in Japan.
