NewJeans, Jimin, Jisoo and Fifty Fifty included in Rolling Stone’s “The Best Songs of 2023 So Far”

BTS Jimin and NewJeans appeared on Rolling Stone’s list of “The Best Songs of 2023 So Far”.

On June 14th (local time), Rolling Stone released “The Best Songs of 2023 So Far” on its homepage and placed “OMG” in 7th place. This is the highest ranking among K-pop songs on the list and is on par with songs by world-class artists.

Rolling Stone praised “OMG”, “Bubbly and giddy, this single from the K-pop quintet NewJeans uses jittery trap snares and sent-from-above vocal harmonies to fully portray the thrills of love’s first blush. A throwback to the most blissful moments of Nineties R&B that has a 21st-century appeal (credit the candy-crushed synths that dart into the mix here and there), ‘OMG’ is a pristine pop song with a glowing — and glowed-up — heart at its core.”

“OMG” is the title track of the same name as NewJeans‘ first single album”OMG” released in early January this year. As soon as this song was released, it swept Korean and international charts along with “Ditto”.

In fact, these two songs alternately topped major music charts in Korea throughout the first quarter of this year. Besides, the long-run popularity of NewJeans’ debut song “Hype Boy” was added, and they wrote a great record by sweeping No.1~3 for 3 consecutive months (January~March) on Melon.

The two songs also performed well on the U.S. Billboard chart. “OMG” stayed on Billboard’s main single chart “Hot 100” for 6 weeks and took the highest ranking of 74th. “Ditto” also charted-in on Billboard’s Hot 100 for 5 consecutive weeks, continuing its popularity. In addition, “OMG” ranked 93rd and “Ditto” ranked 153rd on Billboard’s recently released “Global 200” (week of June 17th), successfully charting-in for 23 weeks and 25 weeks, respectively.

Jimin’s “Like Crazy” ranked 23rd. Rolling Stone talked about this song, “This lovelorn chart-topping single is at once dreamlike, slick, and soulful. The singer floats through waves of marble-smooth synths and sumptuous Eighties drums, as he sings about a romance that feels to be floating just out of reach.”

BLACKPINK Jisoo’s solo song “Flower” and K-pop rookie girl group Fifty Fifty’s “Cupid” ranked 26th and 27th, respectively.

Rolling Stone commented on “Flower”, “A sophisticated track with a staccato, Latin-tinged melody and Caribbean-inspired percussion, ‘Flower’ feels instantly familiar yet unlike anything else on the radio at the same time. True to the name of the song, Jisoo’s voice is in full bloom, with breathy vocals that blossom into a beautiful falsetto by the time she hits a sweeping chorus.

Regarding “Cupid”, they said, “‘Cupid’ is delightful in graceful simplicity, breezing by on a disco-pop groove that has the easygoing effervescence of early-2010s pop, with vocals that exude cool confidence and winning warmth.”

Meanwhile, SZA’s “Kill Bill” (ft. Doja Cat) took first place in this survey.
