Music Bank Global Festival Criticized For Discriminating Against Korean Viewers

The 2023 Music Bank Global Festival’s means of broadcasting has become controversial

The first part of the “2023 Music Bank Global Festival” was broadcast live from KBS Hall in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul on the afternoon of December 15th, and the second part, which was held at the Beruna Dome in Tokorozawa, Saitama, Japan on December 9th, has been made into a recorded broadcast.

Prior to the broadcast, it was reported on the official website of “Music Bank Global Festival” that the second part of the show will be exclusively released on Amazon Prime.

“On Amazon Prime, we will exclusively release all performances, including the first part of the event and the second part held at Beruna Dome, Japan, which has not been broadcasted in Korea,” they said in a notice. According to the website, the exclusive release date is January 26, 2024.

Of course, it was not possible to broadcast all performances due to the limited broadcast time, but criticism was raised against KBS for handing over its program to an overseas OTT platform. In particular, KBS is being criticized for violating Korean viewers’ universal viewing rights because it is a paid public channel operated by their subscription fees.

In addition, a notice on the KBS website revealed that the replay service has also been suspended, saying, “We would like to inform you that the replay service will not be provided due to copyright issues.” The reason why the copyright problem occurred was not notified.

Earlier, KBS became controversial as it decided to hold this year’s Gayo Daejeon in Japan. In fact, for this reason, the title of the “Gayo Daejeon” was changed to “Music Bank Global Festival,” paving ways for it to charge expensive ticket prices.

Korean netizens are responding to this, saying, “That’s unacceptable,” “a K-pop festival that Koreans can’t view,” and “The public broadcast station is blinded by money.”
