According to the Korean Peninsula Population Institute for Future, a survey conducted last month revealed that more than half of unmarried women in their 20s and 30s expressed a lack of desire for both marriage and childbirth
As this trend continues, public opinion toward celebrities who previously identified as advocates of singlehood but have now changed their stance is divided.
Dex
YouTuber-broadcaster Dex appeared on JTBC’s entertainment show “Salty Pawn Shop” on Sep 12th and stated, “I used to be an advocate of singlehood, but I changed my mind in my late 20s. If I meet someone really great, I want to get married.”
Dex also talked about his ideal type, “My ideal type is someone who is wise, hard working and has a sense of humor.“
In the past, Dex was one of the celebrities who declared themselves advocates of singlehood through his YouTube channel. He expressed pessimistic views about marriage, “I tend to lose my mind when I fall in love. I wonder if love can truly last a lifetime.“
Sandara Park
Sandara Park, who had previously identified herself as an advocate of singlehood, also reversed her stance. She appeared on the YouTube channel “No Back Tak Jae-hoon” in May and expressed an indifferent attitude toward marriage, “There are too many people around me who have failed (at marriage). I just want to stay single.“
However, when appearing on MBC’s entertainment show “Radio Star” last month, Sandara Park showed an active attitude toward marriage, “I might get married next year. I might just grab anyone and get married.”
When Park So-hyun, who thought of Sandara Park as someone who supports singlehood, mentioned that she declared singlehood early on, Sandara Park changed her statement, “I’ll cancel my declaration of singlehood.”
Gong Hyo-jin
Actress Gong Hyo-jin, who married singer Kevin Oh in October last year, revealed that she used to identify as an advocate of singlehood. Appearing on Jung Jae-hyung’s YouTube channel in May, Gong Hyo-jin shared, “I thought marriage wasn’t for me after several relationships.”
However, she explained the reason behind her decision to get married, “My heart changed after meeting Kevin Oh. He’s truly an angel and an exceptionally kind person.”
Regarding these celebrities changing their stance on being single, some netizens criticized, “That’s not singlehood, it’s just being unmarried” and “It seems like they easily attach the title of singlehood.” However, some argued that life is long and goals can change over time, showing support for their decisions.
