Chinese actress Zheng Shuang is facing increasing legal and financial hurdles, making her chances of returning to China’s entertainment industry slim.

According to 163, the production company DMG Entertainment, responsible for the drama Jade Lovers starring Zheng Shuang and Lee Jong-suk, was recently ordered by Beijing’s Miyun District People’s Court to pay over 5.65 million RMB (approx. $786,000 USD) on August 14. The company is fully owned by Beijing Century Dongyao Culture Media Co., Ltd.

Jade Lovers has been permanently shelved due to Zheng Shuang’s scandals. The company once sued the actress for 90.5 million RMB ($12.4 million USD) in damages, but she failed to comply.

Since leaving China, Zheng Shuang has been living in the U.S., reportedly struggling financially and relying on family support. There have even been reports of creditors pursuing her abroad, including producers from Secretly and Greatly.

Recently, speculation about her possible comeback surfaced when a video circulated online on the 16th anniversary of her debut. The clip, hinting at her willingness to return, stated: “If you need me, I can come back.” However, the identity of the account operator remains unverified.

Despite these rumors, experts argue that a return is highly improbable. Zheng Shuang still faces unresolved debts, unpaid damages, and the lingering shadow of her scandals.

Born in 1991 in Shenyang, Zheng Shuang was once one of China’s most popular TV and film actresses. However, in 2021, she was embroiled in a surrogacy scandal that led to her being blacklisted by the National Radio and Television Administration.

That same year, Shanghai tax authorities revealed that between 2019 and 2020, she failed to declare 191 million RMB in personal income, evaded 45.27 million RMB in taxes, and underpaid an additional 26.52 million RMB. She was fined a total of 299 million RMB ($46.1 million USD).

With such heavy legal and financial burdens, along with a damaged reputation, Zheng Shuang’s path back to China’s entertainment scene remains highly uncertain.
