zhang linghe gui luan drama

Following the conclusion of Zhu Yu, audiences are already turning their attention to a new historical project that is quickly gaining traction online. The upcoming drama Gui Luan, starring Zhang Linghe and Lin Yun, is being described as a “gender-reversed version” of Zhu Yu, largely due to its similar narrative origins and mirrored character dynamics. Both dramas are adapted from novels by the same author, Tuanzi Laixi, which explains the overlapping themes that fans have already begun to notice.

While Zhu Yu told the story of a commoner woman rescuing a fallen nobleman, Gui Luan flips the formula by placing Zhang Linghe’s character Xiao Li in the role of a low-born rogue who saves a disgraced princess, Wen Yu, played by Lin Yun. The relationship between the two begins as a strategic alliance rooted in survival, gradually evolving into a complicated romance shaped by power struggles, ambition, and emotional conflict. Compared to the relatively fast-developing romance in Zhu Yu, the new series emphasizes a longer period of tension and mistrust, promising a more layered and volatile character dynamic.

One of the biggest talking points surrounding Gui Luan is Zhang Linghe’s transformation. Known for portraying elegant and noble figures in past works, he takes on a drastically different image this time. His character Xiao Li is born to a courtesan, grows up in poverty, and is forced into violence from a young age. After serving time in prison, he becomes a gambling house enforcer before eventually rising to power as a regional warlord. The role demands a raw, aggressive presence that contrasts sharply with Zhang Linghe’s previous refined image, and reports indicate that he physically prepared for the role by gaining muscle weight to better embody the character’s rough background and battlefield strength.

Beyond the main couple, the drama is also drawing attention for its secondary storyline, which appears to push even darker boundaries than its predecessor. In Zhu Yu, the controversial pairing portrayed by Deng Kai and Kong Xue’er gained unexpected popularity due to their intense “forced love” narrative. Gui Luan seems poised to take that formula further, introducing a secondary couple defined by obsession and destruction. The male character Pei Song, originally a noble youth, descends into madness after losing his status and wages war to reclaim power. His relationship with Jiang Yichu evolves into a deeply disturbing dynamic marked by violence, control, and emotional extremes, reportedly surpassing the intensity of Zhu Yu’s infamous subplot.

With a planned 40-episode run and an expected release in the third quarter of 2026 on WeTV, Gui Luan is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated costume dramas of the year. By combining a familiar narrative foundation with more complex character arcs and darker thematic elements, the series is positioned not only as a follow-up success but also as a bold evolution of the storytelling style that made Zhu Yu a hit.
