On May 1, Yuju performed her new song First Love Is a Curse on KBS Music Bank. Rather than the pure and innocent image many fans associated with her in the past, the singer appeared with bold and unconventional stage makeup.
Her styling featured smoky under-eye makeup, dramatic eye-line extensions, and strong red blush extending beneath the eyes, creating a much funkier and more intense visual atmosphere.
After clips from the performance spread online, some netizens reacted with surprise over her changed appearance. Comments included reactions such as, “I came here because I was shocked by her face,” “She looks very different,” and “Isn’t the eye makeup too extreme?” Others even commented that Yuju now resembles Kim So Yeon.
However, many fans quickly defended the singer, arguing that the drastic difference was mainly caused by heavy stage makeup and styling choices. Some pointed out that in her recent vlogs and casual appearances, Yuju still looks very similar to her usual self.
Meanwhile, Yuju officially returned on April 29 with her third mini album In Bloom, marking her comeback approximately eight months after her previous release.
The title track First Love Is a Curse captures the painful emotions left behind by a beautiful first love. Yuju once again participated in both writing and composing the song, further strengthening her reputation as a singer-songwriter.
