Why does Hyun Bin appear in Hirokazu Kore-eda’s new work “The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House”?

Korean actor Hyun Bin appeared in Netflix’s new work “The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House” of Japanese master Hirokazu Kore-eda, who directed the Korean movie “Broker” last year.

“The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House” takes place in the Geisha district in Kyoto and follows the titular character Kiyo (Nana Mori) as she cooks up delicacies every day to support her friend Sumire (Natsuki Deguchi) and the other maiko.

Unlike Sumire, who has talent at being a maiko and earns praise from the geisha overseeing her training, Kiyo came to Kyoto to become a maiko, but her teachers thought she was too clumsy. However, the other apprentices loved her cooking, so she now works at the maiko house as a live-in cook.

In episode 1 of the 9-episode series “The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House”, two faces of Chiyo (Keiko Matsuzaka), who is called the mother of the geishas, drew laughter from viewers. Mother Chiyo, who maintains a dignified and elegant appearance in front of the geishas and maikos, smiles and does a finger heart when looking at a picture of Hyun Bin hidden in her room.

The appearance of Hyun Bin in this drama seems to be due to the explosive popularity of the drama “Crash Landing on You”, starring Hyun Bin, which dominated 1st place on Netflix Japan for a long time . In addition, the names of Korean actors, such as Lee Je Hoon and Um Tae Woong, are also mentioned in the drama.

“The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House” is a drama based on a famous manga of the same name that has sold more than 1.8 million copies in Japan. Produced by director Hirokazu Kore-eda, who always shows affection and warmth for humans, the work is receiving favorable reviews from Japanese viewers.
