Upcoming movie “Soulmate” starring Kim Da Mi, Jeon So Nee, and Byun Woo Seok is like a record of youth

Kim Da Mi, Jeon So Nee and Byun Woo Seok represent the radiant yet sentimental youth.

The movie “Soulmate” (Director Min Yong Geun), which will be released on March 15th, is about two friends Mi So (Kim Da Mi) and Ha Eun (Jeon So Nee) and their classmate Jin Woo (Byun Woo Seok) who share everything from joy, sadness, excitement, and longing.

On February 28th, the premiere of the movie “Soulmate” (Director Min Yong Geun) was held at the Konkuk University entrance of Lotte Cinema in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul. Director Min Yong Geun, Kim Da Mi, Jeon So Nee, and Byun Woo Seok attended the event and talked about the movie.

Soulmate

“Soulmate” is based on the popular Chinese movie “Hello, My Soulmate”. The two works are almost identical. Most of the scenes are similar, and the biggest difference in the Korean version is the “hyper-realism paintings”. The film delicately portrays the friendship, youth, love, and joys and sorrows of the two girls until they become adults. The beautiful scenery of Jeju Island, the main filming location, is also included.

Director Min Yong Geun said, “I’m a male director, so I refused to join at first because I couldn’t understand the sensibility of this movie. I had doubts about whether I could fully understand those emotions. But there was something I was hooked on in a scene in the movie. It was the story of people who ended up meeting after a long time. I felt the power of emotions. When I started working on the scenario, I interviewed many women. Personally, my family is a family with many women. Although I’m a male director, I wanted to portray it with the emotions I’ve seen.”

Director Min then described “Soulmate as “a movie I love”. He said, “No matter how people will talk about it, the parts of this movie are the emotions of love I feel after completing the production process. While making it, I personally realized that I had many life experiences similar to the messages this movie conveys”, adding “There are faces that come to my mind and there are people I want to send these messages to. It’s a work that gives me mixed feelings. Not only the actors but I also love this movie so much”, expressing his affection.

“Soulmate” is also a new page in the life of Kim Da Mi, Jeon So Nee, and Byun Woo Seok. Kim Da Mi and Jeon So Nee, who appear in the story as best friends, boasted a strong friendship and chemistry to the extent that the director and Byun Woo Seok got jealous of them. Kim Da Mi shared, “From the first time I met her, I was very comfortable and didn’t feel awkward at all. I met her many times before we actually started filming, and we talked a lot with each other. Therefore, I felt like we had been closely connected even before we filmed the movie together. We sympathized with each other without trying hard. I think we were able to complete the shoot well because we shared our feelings and communicated with each other a lot”.

Jeon So Nee also confessed, “I was very worried before the shoot because I really wanted to get closer to Kim Da Mi. The time I spent with Da Mi on the set was full of happy and good memories. There were times when I felt lonely and tired during the shoots, and Da Mi made me feel like I can share with her everything, even things that I could hardly say to other people because I was afraid that it would hurt my pride. We formed a reliable and strong friendship and I even felt like it was okay for me to show my weaknesses to her.”

Byun Woo Seok said, “Kim Da Mi and Jeon So Nee give me the feeling that they’re real soulmates. It could be understood in another way. When they talked to each other, I realized that they are really soulmates who like each other a lot”. Describing “Soulmate” as his “dream”, the actor said, “When I was still dreaming of becoming an actor, I already wanted to do a movie about youth. I’m very happy and grateful that I got that chance with ‘Soulmate’”. He added, “I tried my best not to cry. But my tears came out because of the echo from the movie. I hope viewers will enjoy it.”

Finally, the “Soulmate” team talked about the meaning of the movie. Director Min Yong Geun confessed, “There must be someone who comes to mind while watching the movie. It’s okay to be anyone, so why don’t you think about the only person in your heart, that person’s existence and your feelings for that person? It’d be nice to think of your soulmate. I hope that ‘Soulmate’ can be remembered as a movie that you love beyond just enjoying it.”

Kim Da Mi shared, “Like a diary that you sometimes take out, I hope you will feel our movie as a memory that only you know. I also happily filmed it with smiles. I hope those emotions and the efforts we made can be well conveyed to the audience.” Jeon So Nee expressed her feelings, “I think the experience of seeing this movie in the theater is precious. I think it’s mysterious that audiences who choose the same movie at the same time go through this time together. It’s a movie that I made with all my heart, so I hope that as many audiences as possible will watch it.”

Finally, Byeon Woo Seok said, “I watched the movie three times. Until the second time, I only saw Jin Woo, my role. But when I watched it the third time, I saw Mi So and Ha Eun. It seems to change depending on perspective. I think it’ll look like a much more beautiful movie if you watch it according to your own perspective. Please enjoy it several times.”
