Unexpected characteristics of North Korean beauties captured by a photographer who only takes pictures of beautiful women around the world

World-renowned photographer Mihaela Noroc travels all over the world and takes photos of beautiful women.

Noroc started her photography project in 2013 called “The Atlas of Beauty”. With this project, she sees the faces of women around the world and attempts to capture the value of diversity in her photos. Recently, a photo book of Mihaela Noroc has been published and her photos are gaining attention.

Noroc visited North Korea to capture the daily lives of North Korean women in Sinuiju and Pyongyang with her camera.

“I always hear political news about North Korea, but it was my idea to show ordinary people,” Noroc said in an interview with the British daily The Guardian.

She said, “I was so curious about North Korean women. I wanted to see how North Korean women express their beauty and live in an environment that is far from other countries with a different way of life.”

Unexpectedly, North Korean women actively participated in the photography, and Noroc was surprised. She said it was difficult to access world-famous fashion in North Korea, but many women wore high heels despite their conservative attire. “The North side, with nothing known about it, was an uncharted world I wanted to visit. The North Korean women I met had their own unadorned beauty,” she said.

Noroc added, “Everyone told me a North Korean proverb. On the Korean Peninsula, the most beautiful women are in North Korea and the most beautiful men are in South Korea.”

“Women around the world have different political systems and lifestyles,” said Noroc, who has worked on photography projects in nearly 45 countries. She added, “But they had a common link of humanity beyond race, religion, and social status. I want to let people know that we’re beautiful because we’re all different.”
