“Tooth gem” in K-pop, an emerging trend with hidden risks

“Tooth gem” is becoming a trend among K-pop stars; there are hidden risks, nonetheless.

“Tooth gem” is a procedure in which jewelry or cubic is attached to the surface of an idol’s tooth using an adhesive for teeth. This tiny accessory is characterized by a hip and playful charm depending on the color and shape of the cubic.

The gem will remain in place for as long as one month to six months, and the procedure can be performed at a cost of around 100,000 won. It is becoming a means for self-expression at an affordable price.

BLACKPINK Lisa previously showcased her tooth gem at an event appearance in Seoul. Her silver ornament glistened every time Lisa smiled, captivating attention. Previously, the BLACKPINK member carried a tooth gem in 2020 for the “How You Like That” MV.

Other MZ generation popular icons are also jumping on the trend. Lee Young Ji once had a tooth gem to “Earth Arcade 2” by Na PD. Upon seeing the new trendy style, the PD asked whether she had a tooth cavity. The rapper also recommended the new aesthetic for IVE Ahn Yujin on her own show “No Prepare.”

Currently, HyunA and Choi Yena are also expressing their personality with distinctive tooth gems.

Tooth gem is a style derived from Grillz, which is worn to signal wealth and status in the hip-hop world. Grills are a style of fitting that is removable. The tooth gem appears in the early 2000s and was a trend among celebrities and models in 2021. At that time, G-Dragon carried Grillz on his lips and teeth.

However, tooth accessories such as Tusgem and Grillz have been said to have tooth and gum damage, so special dental care is needed.
