This director created a world-famous hit work all by himself when he had no more than 10,000 won in his bank account and even lost 6 teeth

“Squid Game” won 6 awards at Emmy Awards, gaining recognition for both popularity and cinematic quality. In fact, director Hwang Dong-hyuk did not achieve this success in an instant.

World-renowned ‘master’ director Steven Spielberg even said, “I want to steal your brain”. It is known that director Hwang Dong-hyuk had envisioned “Squid Game” since 2008 when he was struggling a hard time without having even 10,000 won in his bank account.

The world changed a lot and it became much “realistic” after 10 years. That’s why Hwang Dong-hyuk decided to challenge the work, which was rejected and judged as “weird and unrealistic” 10 years ago, one more time.

Director Hwang said he was very happy during the production of Season 1, but it turned out that he suffered a lot. He worked on everything, including scenario shooting, editing, etc., all by himself and even lost six teeth due to stress. The director also told a funny story of when he had to wear dentures because of the six missing teeth.

The production process was not easy at all, and as the drama became famous all over the world, he felt that he had to repay the viewers. That’s how Season 2 was planned and people all over the world are looking forward to how the story will be expanded.

In fact, director Hwang Dong-hyuk originally wanted to become a journalist and he even entered the Department of Newspapers at Seoul National University after seeing anchor Um Ki-young. He later developed a love for movies and even joined a movie club at school.

The character Cho Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo), who graduated from Seoul National University, is said to be Hwang Dong-hyuk’s persona. This is the character that he created with his own experiences.

Director Hwang has tried various genres. Then it was the old video camera that his mother bought for him that made him decide to become a director. Since then, he recognized his directing talent and continued his study at the University of Southern California majoring in Film Production.

In 2005, Hwang Dong-hyuk expanded the 18-minute short film “Miracle Mile” he made in the U.S to produce his debut feature film “My Father”. Throughout his career, director Hwang has transformed in various ways and does not limit himself to one genre. Some of his representative works are “Miss Granny” starring Shim Eun-kyung, “Silenced” based on the original work by writer Gong Ji-young, and “The Fortress” based on the novel of the same name by writer Kim Hoon.

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk, who challenged making a drama for the first time with “Squid Game”, revealed that he is planning for Season 2. In addition, he has also returned to movies and has been preparing his next film called “Killing Old People Club”. Regarding this work, he shared, “It will be more violent and brutal”.
