As sudden developments and forced situations continue to appear, many viewers are saying that ENA’s drama “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” is getting strange.
The broadcast on August 11th depicted the story of Hwangjisa Temple in Jeju Island collecting 3,000 won of admission fee. Woo Young-woo (Park Eun-bin) kept thinking about a legitimate reason to get 3,000 won back.
It was also revealed that Jung Myung-seok (Kang Ki-young) was diagnosed with stage 3 of gastric cancer. Hanbada attorneys decided to find the owner of Happy Noodles with the help of Dong Geu-ra-mi (Joo Hyun-young) and Mr. Hairy (Im Sung-jae). It is because they wanted to let Jung Myung-seok taste the meat noodles that he missed.
The love line between Young-woo and Lee Joon-ho (Kang Tae-oh) also faced a crisis. Young-woo announced her breakup with Lee Joon-ho because she cannot make Joon-ho happy. Joon-ho was hurt because he couldn’t understand the sudden breakup.
On the contrary, a subtle atmosphere appeared. Kwon Min-woo (Joo Jong-hyuk) revealed his romantic and considerate aspect, unlike his villain setting that has been seen in previous episodes. Choi Soo-yeon (Ha Yoon-kyung) also confirmed her heart with a hiccup when she was asked, “Do you like me?” by Kwon Min-woo.
All of these details remain questionable to the viewers. First of all, the setting of stage 3 gastric cancer happened out of the blue. Many people are wondering what message the writer wanted to deliver through this. “What is more important than work, health of family?”, do they mean to say this?
In addition, Young-woo was seen emphasizing “30-40% of survival rate” and “You may die soon” several times in front of Myung-seok. These lines were pointed out to be inconsiderate to the viewers who are cancer patients and their families.
Young-woo is described as a very rare case of autism spectrum disorder. She’s a genius who is able to live in society and she can even show great empathy sometimes. For example, in the case of a grandmother hitting the jealous grandfather with an iron, Young-woo realized love from the grandmother in the way she put the curtain on the grandfather. Young-woo also felt sad about the hidden story of the North Korean defector Gye Hyang-sim (Kim Hee-ra). She deeply sympathized with Bang Gu-ppong’s idea of liberating children that no one could understand.
Surprisingly, since the second half of the drama began, her ability to use social skills seems to be selective. Young-woo looked around when she tried to impress Joon-ho’s family members. She also avoided creating an uncomfortable atmosphere by taking another car after breaking up with Lee Joon-ho without telling him the reason.
However, in front of Myung-seok, who is now on the verge of life and death, Young-woo suddenly showed her side of lacking social skills. “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” has been portraying the social and mental growth of an attorney with autism spectrum disorder carefully and step by step since the beginning, so that’s why the mistake in episode 14 made the viewers feel weird.
Young-woo’s best friends who always try to stop her from telling whale stories are acting differently this time. They didn’t tell Young-woo exactly why she shouldn’t tell such stories. Because of that, Young-woo kept on talking about “death”.
Of course, that detail may be a device to show how autistic people lack social skills. If that was the intention of the writer, a scene where Young-woo realized her rudeness is necessary.
In this story, not only the growth of Young-woo but the feelings of cancer patients and their families should be considered. The patients’ fights against cancer should not be used as a tool to show the problem of people with autism spectrum disorder.
Dong Geu-ra-mi and Mr Hairy accompanied the attorneys on their business trip although they had nothing in relation to each other. Many people also doubted the two’s appearance in the plan of Hanbada team searching for “Jung Myung-seok’s happiness”.
The love line between Soo-yeon and Min-woo is also hard to understand. Soo-yeon has thought Min-woo is a jerk who maliciously bothers her friend Young-woo. However, the development from Kwon Min-woo’s family background story revelation to his considerate side and a pink mood between the two appeared so suddenly in the 13th and 14th episodes.
“Extraordinary Attorney Woo” has been well-received as a well-made drama that aroused people’s interest in autism spectrum disorder from the beginning. Its viewer rating also jumped from 0.9% to 15%. The secret of Woo Young-woo’s birth seems to be the main theme of the next two episodes. Did writer Moon Ji-won have a plan for everything or would she end up making an anticlimax story? The drama will end next week.
