“I thought she could make a breakthrough like Lee Byung-hun”… The real crisis in Seo Ye-ji’s acting career is actually happening

Drama fans are commenting that it is Seo Ye-ji who turns Lee Ra-el into a ridiculous character.

Seo Ye-ji is playing Lee Ra-el in tvN’s Wednesday-Thursday drama “Eve”. Lee Ra-el is a person who risks her life to seduce CEO of LY Group Kang Yoon-gyeom (Park Byung-eun) for the revenge she has been preparing for 13 years. With this setting alone, the drama was expected to have a fatal charm with fierce characters.

However, Seo Ye-ji’s performance as Lee Ra-el feels completely wrong. Playing a woman who lost everything and began to take revenge by risking her life, her words and actions are said to be quite sloppy and ridiculous. Seo Ye-ji says her lines in a way that sounds “half air and half sound” and her pauses are also awkward. In the scene where she must have said the line continuously, she broke it into small parts and also ruined the viewers’ immersion in the atmosphere. Assuming such a person exists in real life, the viewers questioned if she could really seduce anyone with this awkward tone despite having a beautiful appearance. Seo Ye-ji’s character has already failed to attract the viewers at this point.

In particular, the 10th episode of “Eve”, which aired on the 30th of last month, received many responses, such as “My immersion was broken from the very first scene”. In this broadcast, Lee Ra-el admitted that she was a “psycho” and threatened to ruin the life of Han So-ra (Yoo Seon). In this situation, the way Seo Ye-ji’s character laughs should give thrills to the viewers. However, her voice was not consistent and her expression was so pleasant, which did not match the serious background music at all. The person who leads this scene should have been Seo Ye-ji but it turned out in an ironic way that the acting ability of actress Yoo Seon stood out even more.

Many audiences are saying that it is Seo Ye-ji who makes Lee Ra-el look like a ridiculous character. Some pointed out that her gestures and movements in the 9th episode where Lee Ra-el promised to Jang Moon-hee (Lee Il-hwa) to carry out proper revenge were overly dramatized. Many other details, such as absurd lines and the character’s mint-colored shadow makeup, have also been said to be hilarious and nonsense by the viewers.

Although Seo Ye-ji suffered a hard time last year due to the gaslighting controversy related to her ex-lover Kim Jung-hyun, at least no one questioned her acting skills at that time. She used to be so well-loved for her unique character transformation in tvN’s drama “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay” and also earned favorable reviews for her performance in the movie “Recalled”, which was released at the time she was on a hiatus due to her scandal. Therefore, many people raised expectations that she would successfully return with “Eve”. Seo Ye-ji was considered a similar case to that of actor Lee Byung-hun, who also managed to overcome his private life scandal through acting.

It seems like Seo Ye-ji’s real crisis is happening now, not in April last year. A broadcasting official said through Sports Seoul on July 6th, “Seo Ye-ji’s dark atmosphere and low-tone voice were said to be the advantages that help her stand out among Korean actresses. Not to mention her private life issue, “Eve” might have been a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity for Seo Ye-ji, who was embroiled in various rumors such as school bullying, forgery of academic documents, and power abuse allegations. However, even acting, which was considered her charm, is now being harshly criticized, it is difficult to call it her strength”, expressing disappointment.
