Song Kang-ho’s acceptance speech at the Cannes in which he expressed affectionate love for his wife is attracting attention from fans.
Song Kang-ho became the first Korean actor to win the Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival for his role as Sang-hyeon, a divorced man who runs a laundry shop, in “Broker”. Many people are congratulating him on his 7th success at the Cannes. Above all, Song Kang-ho’s affection toward his wife, who always gives the greatest support to him, created a lovely atmosphere that touched everyone.
Song Kang-ho was awarded the Best Actor trophy at the 75th Cannes Film Festival, which was held at the Lumiere Grand Theater of Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France on May 28th (local time). When his name was called out, Song Kang-ho hugged Kang Dong-won and director Hirokazu Kore-eda then took the stage. First of all, he greeted in French, “Merci Beaucoup (Thank you).”
He added, “This is such an honor, thank you. I’d like to express my deep appreciation to the great artist – director Hirokazu Kore-eda. I also want to thank my fellow actors Kang Dong-won, Lee Ji-eun, Lee Joo-young and Bae Doo-na for their hard work and share this honor with them. And CEO Lee Yoo-jin and CJ officials, thank you so much.”
Song Kang-ho then drew attention as he said, “My beloved wife is on the second floor right now. I’m so happy that it turned into a great gift today, and I want to dedicate the glory of this trophy and my eternal love to her”.
Song Kang-ho’s special love for his wife is widely known in the Korean entertainment industry. Song Kang-ho married former theater actress Hwang Jang-sook in November 1995 and has one son and one daughter. When Song Kang-ho stepped on the Red Carpet of the Cannes Film Festival for the first time for the movie “Secret Sunshine”, he was accompanied by his wife instead of a manager. Spotted walking on the street hand in hand with his wife during that time, Song Kang-ho smiled and said, “I feel so good”, adding, “I’m a husband who is often away from home but I get some points from my wife at times like this”. When asked for a photo of the couple, Song Kang-ho politely refused, saying “If my wife’s face is shown, how can we get a discount when buying things?”
Revealing how he received strength from his wife during the times when he had nothing as a theater actor and was about to give up on being an actor, Song Kang-ho said, “She’s not a young and hot actor in her 20s and 30s, so what should we afraid of?”. Now that on the day he was honored as the first Korean male actor to win Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival, his wife was with him.
Since Jeon Do-yeon’s Best Actress award for “Secret Sunshine” in 2007, this is the second time that Korea achieved the acting award at the Cannes Film Festival. With “Broker”, Song Kang-ho has been invited to Cannes for the 7th time, following “The Host” (2006), “Secret Sunshine” (2007), “The Good, the Bad, the Weird” (2008), “Thirst” (2009), “Parasite” (2019) and “Emergency Declaration” (2021). He also holds the record of being the Korean actor who has the most films nominated for the Competition category at the Cannes Film Festival.
At the award ceremony this year, director Park Chan-wook won Best Director, helping the Korean film industry earn two awards at a time. This is the 4th time director Park Chan-wook entered the Competition category at the Cannes after winning the Grand Prix for “Old boy” (2004), and Jury Prize for “Thirst” (2009). Although “The Handmaiden” (2017) failed to win an award but Park Chan-wook won Best Director for “Decision to Leave” after 6 years.
Meanwhile, “Broker” is the first Korean film directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, who won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes for “Shoplifters”. “Broker” depicts the unexpected and special journey of people who get associated with baby boxes. The movie will premiere in Korea on June 8th.
