Sunmi, who is about to make a comeback, shares, “Pponggi style + Monika’s choreography is the perfect combination for my new song ‘Heart Burn’”

Singer Sunmi will make a comeback with the single “Heart Burn”, which is full of Pponggi vibe.

Sunmi held a showcase to celebrate the release of her new digital single “Heart Burn” at Shinhan pLay Square Mecenatpolis, Mapo-gu, Seoul on June 29th.

“Heart Burn” is a song about the fever of hot love on a summer day. Sunmi explained, “The song starts with a really pretty guitar sound. The guitar riff is very oriental. It’s a strange song that starts with a guitar riff containing Korean spirit.”

Regarding the choreography, she said, “I use very huge fans. The fan dance was created beautifully like a painting. The point choreography is the hula dance. A rubber band will appear in the middle of the song. I use the rubber band to dance for real.”

Sunmi continued, “I played with rubber bands a lot when I was in middle school. Teachers these days don’t teach them that. Since my music is listened to by various age groups, I think people of my generation of my parents’ generation will recall something like ‘I used to play rubber bands like this when I was young’, and people who don’t know rubber band games will think ‘So there is a game like this’. International fans probably don’t know it either. Teacher Monika came up with this new idea and composed various moves for the choreography of ‘Heart Burn’.”

Sunmi also talked about the process of working with Monika. She said, “I never thought I would be able to work with Monika. She’s one of the busiest people these days. Despite her busy schedule, Monika unnie was still willing to choreograph my song. When I saw her on the TV, I used to think that she was an arrogant, coldhearted, and strict person. I couldn’t meet her because I was busy working on music composing, so I talked to her through DM and she was so humble and gentle. I felt so thankful.”

She added, “While preparing for ‘Heart Burn’, I needed fresh ideas. That’s why I thought of PROWDMON and teacher Monika. They suggested the creative idea of the rubber band dance and created lots of impressive moves. The choreography is very fresh and new and I think it goes well with the song.”

In addition, Sunmi confessed, “By presenting both the fan dance and rubber band dance on the stage at the same time, I think the performance will be filled with Korean vibes. However, there is one thing that makes me worry. It’s not about me but about the fans. It’s actually really heavy. There are quite a lot of places that make fans but I heard no company can make the big-sized fans that I want. It’s the kind of fans that can’t be folded. I’ve asked all the companies but they all said it was impossible. So I made the fans myself and drew pretty illustrations on them. I drew pretty paintings of different kinds, such as watercolor or landscape, on each fan.”

Sunmi also revealed the reason why she added Korean elements to the song. She said, “I think Korean-style things are popular. So I think I should add the so-called ‘Pponggi (pop songs that have the feel of trot songs)’ vibe. I put those elements in and I think they suit me so well. For this reason, I enjoyed making the song. I also tried to sing ‘Heart Burn’ in a way that reveals Korean spirit.”

Regarding her goals for this promotion, Sunmi said, “Since I’ve been a soloist for 10 years, I feel like making something big. But as I won’t be doing this for only 1 or 2 years more, people said ‘You don’t need to make things too big’. My goal for this album is to make everyone think ‘Sunmi has returned. What is she showing this time? What kind of song is it?’. I don’t have any bigger goal than that.”
