Sooyoung’s Play “Wife” to Strengthen Response Against Illegal Recordings During Performances

Recently, on a Korean online community, there were posts about a male audience member of the play “Wife”, seemingly a fan of Girls’ Generation’s member and actress Choi Sooyoung, who pulled out a DSLR camera and continuously recorded the performance.

Similar incidents of photo and video recording were reported elsewhere, but the on-site staff did not intervene. As more similar experiences were shared, issues with lax venue management came to light.

Regarding this matter, on Jan 7th, the ‘Wife’ production team explained to OSEN, “It’s not that we deliberately didn’t prevent it. Due to the nature of the performance venue, there are blind spots that cannot be seen directly by human eyes, and we were unaware of them.”

However, they stated their position to strengthen measures, including increasing internal staffing, to prevent such incidents in the future.

The ‘Wife’ team stated, “Internally, we plan to supplement staff on the house side. Since Choi Sooyoung is popular, there are many foreign audience members. The existing guidance messages were only in Korean, so we plan to add English messages and reinforce announcements during Act 2.”

Continuing, they said, “The production company also plans to respond strongly to the illegal recording and uploading of footage for secondary processing. Continuous monitoring is planned in relation to this.”

Meanwhile, the play ‘Wife’ is a work that seamlessly connects four eras from the end of Henrik Ibsen’s play ‘A Doll’s House’ to 2046, focusing on women and queer life.
