Song Young-kyu , who portrayed Kim Min-jung , the coach of Daesang High School’s rugby team, made a powerful impression in the drama’s debut episode on July 25 , especially in an intense confrontation scene with lead character Joo Ga-ram (played by Yoon Kye-sang ).
However, just before the show’s premiere, Song became the center of controversy due to a drunk driving incident , prompting the production team to announce adjustments to his on-screen appearances.
SBS has confirmed that The Winning Try is a pre-produced series , and that minimal edits are currently underway for episodes not yet released on global OTT platforms. “These changes are being made carefully so as not to disrupt the overall flow of the story,” the team noted.
Tragically, Song Young-kyu was found deceased on the morning of August 4 in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. He was 55 years old . No suicide note was found, and police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of death.
His wake is being held at Dabos Hospital in Yongin, with the funeral set for 8 a.m. on August 6 .
