song mino military service controversy

WINNER member Song Mino is facing a prosecution request of 1 year and 6 months in prison on charges of unauthorized absence from his public service duty.

From March 2023 until his discharge in December 2024, Song Mino served as a public service worker at a facility management corporation and a public welfare center in Mapo-gu, Seoul. According to prosecutors, he was absent without valid reason for a total of 102 days during this period, repeatedly leaving his assigned workplace without authorization.

In his final statement in court, Song Mino expressed remorse, saying, “I suffer from bipolar disorder and panic disorder, but I know these cannot serve as excuses. As someone who has received so much love, I am ashamed that I failed to set a good example.” He added that if given the opportunity to serve again, he would faithfully complete his duties.

The court also announced that it will proceed with the trial of a service supervisor, identified as Mr. Lee, who has been charged with falsifying attendance-related documents. A joint sentencing date for both individuals will be scheduled after Mr. Lee’s next hearing on May 21.

Previously, Song Mino opened up about his mental health struggles during his appearance on Dr. Oh’s Golden Clinic. He revealed that he had been dealing with panic disorder, depression, and bipolar disorder since around late 2017, describing his emotional state as feeling “trapped in a deep valley.” He shared that he began seeking medical treatment after experiencing severe panic symptoms, including difficulty breathing.

He further explained that he was diagnosed during the filming of variety shows like New Journey to the West and Kang’s Kitchen, recalling that he would often cry alone after shoots. “When the camera turned off, life felt like a tragedy,” he said, adding that he chose not to share his struggles with fellow members out of fear and lack of courage.

His fellow members also spoke candidly about his condition. Kang Seung-yoon shared that he could sense something was wrong even without being told, while Lee Seung-hoon offered a more direct perspective. He noted that while Song Mino has struggled, he has also experienced privileges others may not have, saying, “Just as there are losses, there are gains. It’s true that Mino has enjoyed things many people cannot.”

Lee added that although everyone experiences periods of sadness, he believes Song Mino has the strength to overcome his challenges.
