Song Joong-ki Recalls Late Lee Sun-kyun Upon Expressing His Feelings About “My Name Is Loh Kiwan”

Actor Song Joong-ki revealed his sincere thoughts and feelings after acting in the movie “My Name Is Loh Kiwan”

The movie talk for Netflix’s movie “My Name Is Loh Kiwan” was held on March 3rd with the attendance of actors and director Kim Hee-jin in the Q&A session with the audience.

“My Name Is Loh Kiwan” is a movie about a North Korean defector who is desperately trying to get approved as a refugee in Belgium and a woman who has lost her will to live. Song Joong-ki played Loh Kiwan who tries to survive until the end.

When asked how he approached the pain that Loh Kiwan went through to find the will in life, Song Joong-ki said, “I saved this scene in my head. I kept thinking about it while preparing for the character and it was a scene I imagined because I had never experienced Kiwan’s situation. The teacher who taught me the North Korean language explained the story and the situation they experienced. It was a sad story but they talked about it very calmly with a smile. I also tried to be like that when acting in the movie”.

After watching the movie, a viewer said the line “Do we need to meet any qualifications to be happy?” was memorable. Song Joong-ki added, “I believe that this movie has a strong connection. That line also left a lingering feeling in me and I asked the director about it too. I don’t think the problem in this movie won’t be resolved if Kiwan doesn’t ask Marie that question. I think Kiwan wants to hear Marie say they deserve happiness, so when Marie replies, ‘We’re qualified enough’, Kiwan cries.”

The actor continued, “I don’t know what qualifications we need to deserve happiness, but I think everyone regardless of their status, deserves it because they were born as human beings”, adding “That’s why we should treat each other nicely. I want to teach my son who was born last year what I felt through this movie”.

At the movie talk, an event in which the audience wrote letters about the comfort they received through “My Name Is Loh Kiwan” was held. Song Joong-ki mentioned the letters, saying “I’ve done a lot of movie greetings so far but this one is the most meaningful. As a human, Song Joong-ki also has many shortcomings. When the film was released on Netflix, I also wrote a letter to a close brother who left this world at the end of last year”, indirectly mentioning the late actor Lee Sun-kyun.

He added, “This movie is not a blockbuster, but if you feel something in your heart after watching it, I hope it becomes an opportunity for you to think about people around you. I hope this movie can give you a reason to write a letter to other people saying they deserve happiness”.

“My Name Is Loh Kiwan” premiered on Netflix on March 1st.
