As one of the most sought-after names in the film industry today, Song Joong Ki is known as a talented and hardworking actor. From the early days with Sungkyunkwan scandal, Nice guy, A Werewolf Boy, etc., he has attracted attention for his ideal ratings as well as his remarkable progress over time. However, talking about the works that really brought him to the top of his career, it was definitely Descendants of the Sun 6 years ago and last year’s hit drama Vincenzo.
Opportunities are always there for those who have faith and will. Song Joong Ki has quietly persevered on the acting path, in order to accomplish such brilliant achievements as today. He has never considered it to be his own merit because he has always been helped out by many people.
After the Netflix TV series Vincenzo released in 2021, it immediately created a fever and conquered love from audiences around the world. The drama is considered to have an even larger and broader viewership than the blockbuster Descendants of the Sun. Talking about this success, Song Joong Ki said, “I always look forward to the ratings and the audience’s reaction. The success of Descendants of the Sun and Vincenzo was truly beyond my imagination.”
“Especially Vincenzo, the audience watching this work comes from different cultures and only a few of them can fully understand the context. It was a very fresh experience for me to see people from different countries talking about VIncenzo, and it seemed to have opened a new door for me to understand their thoughts,” he added
The road to becoming an actor is always filled with thorns and Song Joong Ki admits that he hasn’t fully grasped it yet. “I believe all actors always think about two major things, that is, how to improve their acting skills and how to be a better actor. Frankly speaking, I’ve been acting for so many years and I don’t have a clear answer. I have gained experience through my work and keep learning every time I act,” he shared.
“For example, when I played Vincenzo, the characters were quite diverse, they were both cold and funny. The drama’s script writer has written many outstanding comedies, which puts more pressure on me. I’ve always felt that acting is not all about one person. Even though I’m the main character, I have to rely on the interaction with my co-stars and make concerted efforts with the crew to portray my character,” said Song Joong Ki.
Whether it’s acting or everyday life, Song Joong Ki always believes that the most important thing for him is his relationship with the people around him. “I really enjoy being with my family and they always give me endless support. I had a lot of dreams when I was young, but as you know, children’s dreams are always changing. When I was in middle school, I wanted to become an actor. However, my parents did not like it very much. At first they supported my wish, but then they strongly opposed it when they knew that I wanted to join the entertainment industry. Gradually, they also accepted and all my dreams came true,” said the 1985-born star.
Step by step making the dream come true can be said to be Song Joong Ki‘s words to live by for many years. Besides proving himself as an actor, he also hopes to attempt different career aspects. “If you ask me what career I want to pursue if I’m not an actor, I think I will work behind the scenes, but I certainly will not switch to anything unrelated to acting,” the actor affirmed.
He continued, “I also like dramas, movies, short films, web movies and I want to combine them all. As for which one I like best, I don’t think it’s necessary to differentiate. This question is impossible to answer as to asking if you prefer your father or mother.”
Another special thing is that Song Joong Ki is often called with the title “Song captain” on the film set, because according to him the most important thing in filming is teamwork: “At the set, sometimes the director can’t manage everything, so I don’t mind helping them share some of the work and act as a bridge between the director and the actors and staff. That’s why people give me this nickname. I also think from the director’s and writer’s point of view, and learn how they think I should express my feelings.”
