Actor Song Hye-kyo was absent from the awards night where she was nominated for the Grand Prize. Is this an inevitable choice due to the pandemic? Or just simply refusing to be the “wallflower” for others?
Actor Song Hye-kyo was absent from the awards ceremony where was nominated for the Grand Prize. Song Hye-kyo’s “Now, We’re Breaking Up”, in which she partnered with Jang Ki-yong, was nominated for the Grand Prize, but she did not reveal why she failed to attend the awards ceremony.
On Dec 31st, the 2021 SBS Drama Awards was held. Lee Ha-nui, Lee Je-hoon, and Kim So-yeon, who were nominated for the Grand Prize, had time to talk about various stories before the announcement of the biggest award and watch the parody VCR of the Grand Prize candidates.
The absence of Song Hye-kyo made people pay even more attention. Amid soaring viewers’ curiosity, MC Shin Dong-yeop said, “There was originally one more person for the nomination of the Grand Prize, but only three are here.” Shin Dong-yeop did not directly mention the name of Song Hye-kyo, nor did SBS reveal the reason for Song Hye-kyo‘s absence.
However, Song Hye-kyo posted a post on SNS at the same time when the awards ceremony was in progress. In addition, she posted a selfie with her dog with a New Year’s greeting saying “HAPPY NEW YEAR” without any explanation, drawing even more doubt. On this day, Song Hye-kyo did not receive any awards, including the Grand Prize.
This is not the first time Song Hye-kyo was absent from an awards ceremony. With her role in drama “Worlds Within”, she was a prominent nominee for Netizens Awards and Best Couple Awards at the 2008 KBS Drama Awards held on December 31st, 2008. However, Song Hye-kyo couldn’t attend the ceremony due to her overseas schedule. Song Hye-kyo didn’t receive any awards at that ceremony, and fans were disappointed because they had waited for Song Hye-kyo to show up.
Did she already know that she couldn’t win any awards? The two awards ceremonies that Song Hye-kyo didn’t attend despite being nominated have one thing in common. Although Song Hye-kyo’s works were loved by many viewers due to the power of her brand reputation, they recorded sluggish performances in terms of ratings.
However, not only Song Hye-kyo but a person who is known as “the best man at awards ceremonies” among celebrities also refused to attend events. Yoo Jae-suk expressed his intention to be absent from the 2021 KBS Entertainment Awards and SBS Entertainment Awards. However, he appeared at the MBC Entertainment Awards, at which he had a high possibility of winning the Grand Prize. It might have depended on the result of each broadcasting station’s events that determined whether he attended or not.
Lee Kyung-kyu was also absent from KBS Entertainment Awards last year. The past scenes of when stars attended awards ceremonies and congratulated each other even if they were not nominated has gradually disappeared. This led to netizens raising opinions that awards ceremonies have become boring with repeated format every year.
The possibility of an inevitable choice was also emphasized in the pandemic situations surrounding us. Yoo Jae-suk suffered from COVID-19 and was recently allowed to go home from self-quarantine after his complete recovery. However, he reportedly did not attend awards ceremonies to minimize his movement because it was not long after he fought against the disease. The same reason could explain Song Hye-kyo’s absence. Since this is a sensitive period, people seem to have let it pass without making any noise.
