“Smugglers” Go Min Si, “I made a shocking appearance transformation. Senior actress Kim Hye Soo gave me advice and gifts”

Go Min Si explained the challenges she faced when working on “Smugglers” and the help she received from senior actors and the director.

Actress Go Min Si recently had an interview at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, and revealed various behind stories about her new movie “Smugglers”.

Released on July 26th, “Smugglers” depicts what happens when big smuggling takes place in front of people who are making a living by picking up daily necessities thrown into the sea. Go Min Si took on the role of Go Ok Boon, an information collector who knows everything about Guncheon.

Regarding the challenge of joining “Smugglers” movie project, Go Min Si said she was worried a lot about her own character, Madam OK Boon, who runs a coffee shop. As the actress wondered, “I play a Madam, then shouldn’t I look mature? Or give off a youthful vibe?”. In response, director Ryu Seung Wan said, “In the 1970s, the background of this movie, there were many people who became Madam in their early 20s”. Thanks to the director’s explanation, Go Min Si became more confident. To understand OK Boon, she also learned materials provided by Director Ryu and the staff to understand the background or watched videos and listened to the music of that time.

The actress pointed out she made a great transformation in appearance through this movie. Trying seagull eyebrows and thick makeup to become Ok Boon, Go Min Si looked in the mirror and thought, “Is it okay? I cut my hair and had sideburns. What if the viewers couldn’t concentrate on the movie because of my shocking image?”. She smiled and added, “It took me a long time to adapt to that new appearance. Everyone said they liked it on the set so I gained more strength. If I had the makeup that suited me, I could act more confidently”.

Regarding Director Ryu’s special request for her during the shoot, Go Min Si said, “There’s a scene where Ok Bun looks in the mirror. The Director suggested that I should check my teeth in a way as if there was chili powder on them, and he demonstrated it. I diligently acted according to the director’s instruction, and he really satisfied with my performance”. She added, “The director emphasized the shabby and dirty aspects of Ok Boon. When I heard his explanation, I tried to make it 150% perfectly.”

Revealing that she has been working nonstop since her debut, Go Min Si confessed, “I used to take a three-month break after completing one work and before joining a new filming crew. But it was also the longest resting time for me until now. During the break, I kept feeling useless and wanted to work quickly”, adding “I want to work hard without regret and burn everything for my passion”. Seeing Go Min Si overwork herself, Kim Hye Soo, who also appears in “Smugglers”, advised her junior actress, saying “Everything about you is good, but I feel like you’re being too harsh on yourself. Maybe it helps you produce good results in your work, but you also need to take good care of your condition.”

Apart from the warm advice, Kim Hye Soo also gave Go Min Si gifts such as shrimp, meat, fruit, and a grill pan. Go Min Si said, “Senior actress Hye Soo sent ma lots of delicious food on holidays”. Revealing that Kim Hye Soo also gave her and Park Kyung Hye the clothes she wore when she was young, Go Min Si shared, “Isn’t it meaningful to receive her old clothes? I’m still keeping them well”. Together with the mist and face masks from Yum Jung Ah, Go Min Si really received many unexpected gifts from her senior actresses after working on “Smugglers”.
