SHINee’s Taemin “What I wanted was something ‘genderless’ that still feels natural when a guy does it”

SHINee’s Taemin expressed his honest thoughts about his 15 years of career

Taemin appeared as a guest on “SUCHWITA”, which was released through BTS’s official YouTube channel on Oct 30th.

Taemin, who made a comeback by releasing his new album “Guilty” at 6 PM on the same day, said, “The expectations of the public eye… And there must be things they’re expecting from me. But like you know, it’s our mentality that we don’t want to do something we’ve already done. It’s sort of our calling to keep doing something new which is what I thought but since it’s been a while since I’ve made a comeback. You can say it’s a Taemin cliche but something that the people want. I wanted to capture the real me and add a bit of change in the B-side tracks. I think I’m in that transitional phase. I love doing things that make people say ‘You’re doing this?’. It’s unraveling these things in a witty way. Making people say ‘I didn’t think it would work, but it does’ within the limit of what’s accepted. What I wanted was something genderless that still feels natural when a guy does it. Something that’s persuasive but something thrilling like walking on a fine line. So when I said that I wanted to show something sensational, this song is shocking and makes it seem like we’re breaking limits of taboo. I thought it could capture that.”

Taemin was the first member of SHINee to make a solo debut, and he’s now celebrating his 10th year as a solo artist.

He confessed, “After debuting at 16, I had this goal of when I turn 20. The image of me in my 20s. ‘I’m gonna be the best’, ‘After these four years, I’m gonna be the best’, so I really worked hard. I practiced a lot and worked on improving myself. Then it was the end of the year right before turning 20. I saw myself now at 20 years old and I was so lacking. So much more than I expected. So I went to the practice room in that early morning and I cried and screamed. And then I kept practicing. I practiced really hard. And just when I thought I was at my limits, the company gave me a chance. It felt like destiny.”

When asked “If you could go back to that time, to a time when you had to make a certain decision, what do you want to change the most?“, Taemin replied, “First of all, I fought with the members the most. I was almost a fighter, so I’d lose my temper a lot. So the mistakes I made that hurt others! I don’t want to make the same mistakes and be able to understand the members because I know their personalities now. And I wouldn’t be so intense, but I want to experience the things you can only feel when you’re a teenager.

To the question “How do you think part two of SHINee will look like?“, Taemin shared, “To be really honest I don’t want to define the concept of SHINee’s part two because the colors of SHINee are made through that bond and the memories we’ve made with our fans throughout our 10s and 20s. I think we’re a team that takes them back to the days. We put a lot of work into the part two of each of our individual activity. So that when we gather together again, that’s when we go back to the past.
