A behind-the-scenes story about SHINee’s song “Juliette” written by the late member Jonghyun has been unveiled.

On May 28th, SHINee held their 15th debut anniversary fanmeeting “Everyday is SHINee DAY: Piece of SHINE” at Jamsil Indoor Gymnasium in Seoul. The fanmeeting, which already took place on the previous day and was broadcast live on the 28th, provided a chance for SHINee and Shawol (SHINee World – SHINee’s fandom) to celebrate their special day.

It was SHINee’s first fanmeeting after four years and eight months since the one in September 2018. That’s why it received enthusiastic responses from Shawol from all over the world.

In particular, SHINee members performed their hit songs, such as “Don’t Call Me”, “Good Evening”, “Replay”, “Everybody”, “AMIGO”, etc. While telling some behind stories about each song, they mentioned “Juliette” written by Jonghyun.

It was Jonghyun who came up with the lyrics for “Juliette”. This song has impressive emotional lyrics and its melody was a combination of sophisticated rhythms and acoustic drum sounds.

It is known that Jonghyun got his inspiration from the movie “Romeo and Juliet” when thinking about the lyrics for the song. He even decided to use the ‘Romeo’ concept for the album.

At the fanmeeting, leader Onew laughed and said, “In the middle of the song, there was a verse with the word ‘jijijik'”. Key also added, “That’s the song ‘Juliette’”, adding “The lyrics were originally written as ‘jijijik, I got electrified by you’.”

Key continued, “I remember that I couldn’t control my expression when I first received the lyrics. So I said, ‘I think it’s very unique’”, sharing the story behind the song.

According to the members, the lyrics “Juliette, I’ll dedicate my soul to you” almost became “Jijijik, I got electrified by you”. During an interview in the past, Jonghyun also said, “While watching ‘Romeo and Juliette’, I found that this work can be both a comedy or a tragedy in some ways.  Since Romeo and Juliette are 16 and 14, I thought we could portray the concept of ‘young love’.”
