Shin Hye-sun Praised For Her Portrayal Of Sam-dal With Diverse Charms In “Welcome to Samdal-ri”

Shin Hye-sun continues to captivate the small screen viewers with her performance in the new drama

At the press conference held before the first broadcast of JTBC’s Sat-Sun drama “Welcome to Samdal-ri”, director Cha Young-hoon described Shin Hye-sun as “one of a few actors who digest different drama genres with stable tone and manners without exaggerating her characters”. The video released on the next day helped viewers fully understand the director’s comment. Shin Hye-sun stole the attention by perfectly immersing herself in Jo Sam-dal, a character that has all melodrama, human, and slapstick aspects at once. Her diverse expressions as Sam-dal made viewers laugh and exclaim “Shin Hye-sun did it again”.

To explain her personality, Jo Sam-dal said, “If I make a mistake, I will keep acting crazy until I can relieve my anger. That’s why people call me ‘crazy girl’”. This was clearly shown in the scene where she caught her boyfriend having an affair. Rather than being sad like other drama female leads, Sam-dal pushed her anger level to the limit and boldly did a verbal counter-attack toward him. To pay back as much as she received, Sam-dal even went to Chung-gi’s company and threw spoiled kimchi on his head in front of everyone, creating a satisfying moment.

When discovering that the person whom her boyfriend was having an affair with was none other than her assistant Bang Eun-joo, Sam-dal was shocked at first but she quickly calmed herself down and threw sharp but meaningful remarks at Eun-joo.

Even though Sam-dal looks like an unbothered person on the outside, she does feel hurt inside. Not only did Sam-dal lose her beloved assistant and boyfriend but also had to expose their affair. Chung-gi’s attitude of not feeling sorry even after getting exposed of cheating hurt Sam-dal even more. Sam-dal made everyone laugh when she acted crazily in front of her sisters as soon as she returned home after drinking heavily but then drew sympathy when she began crying loudly like a child due to overwhelming emotions. Appearing strong on the outside, Sam-dal is also a woman with a tender heart. Experiencing continuous pain, she still reflected on her actions that day and even wondered if she had hurt Eun-joo with her harsh words.

Sam-dal’s unique charm is the way she naturally expresses herself more in front of people she is comfortable with, such as her sisters, the Five Eagle Brothers, and especially Jo Yong-pil (Ji Chang-wook). The scene where Sam-dal grabs her sisters’ collars as they try to escape from their mother after getting scolded for drinking beers and her reunion with Yong-pil proved that so well. With Sam-dal leaving life in Seoul and getting intertwined with people in her hometown, viewers’ anticipation is higher for how she will continue showcasing her diverse charms.

“Welcome to Samdal-ri” airs every Saturday and Sunday at 10:30 p.m.
