According to QQ, the Chinese entertainment industry is currently experiencing a downturn, with many productions struggling to secure investors and audiences. As a result, actors whose recent track records have been weak are increasingly being sidelined, and Shen Yue has reportedly become one of them.
Recently, rumors surfaced that Shen Yue was set to star opposite Zhang Wanyi in the drama Wish You Long Happiness (tentative title). However, fans of Zhang Wanyi strongly opposed her casting, openly urging the production team to remove her from the project. They cited her poor acting evaluations and consistently low-performing works as major concerns. Notably, the boycott received considerable public support, as many viewers expressed reluctance to see their favorite actors paired with performers perceived as box-office liabilities.
Shen Yue rose to fame in 2017 through A Love So Beautiful, where her innocent image and youthful charm earned her widespread popularity and expectations that she would become the next generation’s youth drama icon. However, over the past nine years and nearly 20 projects later, she has failed to produce another widely recognized hit.
Her acting has been criticized for stagnation, unclear diction, and exaggerated expressions, while her physique and styling have also drawn negative attention. Viewers have increasingly questioned her suitability for leading roles in romance dramas, often describing her performances as shallow and forgettable.
In terms of performance metrics, Shen Yue’s dramas reportedly average only 5–8 million views per episode, far below the 40–70 million typically seen by top-tier stars. Several of her works have also received low ratings on Douban, including Use for My Talent, Meteor Garden, and Another Me, with scores ranging from 3.5 to 4.3 out of 10.
With the drama market cooling and even major stars experiencing recent setbacks, actors already perceived as declining face harsher scrutiny than ever. As audience expectations rise and competition intensifies, Shen Yue’s future roles remain uncertain, with casting controversies highlighting how unforgiving the current market has become.
