Seoul Vibe” is a car-chasing action film that tells about a car chase that takes place in 1988 when the Sangedong Supreme team receives an irresistible offer and is put into an operation to unravel the corruption behind the VIPs’ slush funds.

“Seoul Vibe” is a highly-anticipated production this year as Netflix spent 20 billion won on making it. This movie mainly focuses on car chasing and it contains elements of a typical action movie, such as gun battles and explosions.

Nicknamed “the Korean version of ‘Fast and Furious’” even before its official release, “Seoul Vibe” spares a lot of screentime on car chasing scenes. The car-chasing action scenes that appear throughout the movie offer a cool attraction that is just right for the late summer. Above all, it also gives great a pleasant feeling and satisfaction by breaking various objects, which was hard to be seen in Korean movies.

The tension of the car chase was maximized as they go through roads uiwth many obstacles while avoiding narrow alleys. In the movie, the actors led by Yoo Ah-in present actions with their rawness and run without hesitation. This is also the killing point of “Seoul Vibe” to draw unexpected laughter during the breathtaking car chase.

The old music that appears in the right scenes creates nostalgia and reminds the viewers of that period of time. Familiar songs, such as “DamDaDi”, Fire Engine’s “Last Night Story”, Song Gol Mae’s “A Chance Encounter”, Koreana’s “The Victory”, etc., helped emphasize more on the identity of “Seoul Vibe”.

Yoo Ah-in’s performance is still the highlight. He appears as Sangedong Supreme team leader Dong-wook,  a speed maniac who enjoys racing. This person has been involved in various crimes but cleverly evades the law by all means. Yoo Ah-in, who runs the dangerous car chases on the road, does not lose his sense of speed and evokes a thrilling pleasure throughout the movie. Yoo Ah-in’s eyes with a chic expression while holding the steering wheel every time he turns around wowed the viewers and drew their admiration for his acting skills.

At the end of the story, “Seoul Vibe” also stimulates the tears by showing the close relationship between brother and sister as well as friendship. Yoo Ah-in, who has accumulated solid acting experience by playing new characters in each work, portrayed Dong-wook by carefully paying attention to the details. By leading the whole team, he has continued to be in charge of a role that is similar to the main character.

However, what is regrettable is that the main cast, which was expected to leave a strong impression, failed to create the proper strength. Park Joo-hyun, who won Best Actress in the TV category at the 57th Baeksang Arts Awards for Netflix’s “Extracurricular”, couldn’t control her strength properly. From her facial expressions to her voice and actions, she put too much energy into them.

Go Kyung-pyo took on a role that is quite similar to the one he portrayed in the recently released movie “6/45”, from the personality to the vibe. Whether he was aiming to emerge as a comedy actor or not, he has failed to show off his charms properly.

The performances of Moon So-ri, Kim Sung-kyun, and Oh Jung-se, who are called “actors who guarantee a box office success”, also did not stand out. Whether it was because of their other amazing works or not that their roles, which seem to be the same, left a disappointment to the viewers. In particular, Kim Sung-kyun has already worn the same fashion for several works, so it confuses the viewers about what character he is playing. Rather than pointing out that the director couldn’t make use of the actor’s ability, it seems that the actors themselves need to change their acting.

Ong Seung-woo and Song Min-ho, who started as idols and now want to walk on the path of actors, could not escape from characters that are somewhat cheesy. Their color as singers were still shown while acting and the viewers couldn’t feel them at all. Although the two are professional idols, it seems like they are not ready to expand their scope to acting.

Except for Yoo Ah-in, the “too powerful” acting of other actors is slightly cheesy. However, it is still a good movie to watch with the spectacular car chases in the second half of the movie. In other words, thanks to the action scenes, the actors’ poor performances were relatively less visible.

Seoul Vibe

“Seoul Vibe” is a movie that has in a hip retro mood. People who love Hollywood movies with high-speed car chases would love it.
